Not everyone likes the Metro-style Start screen, apps, and charms of Windows 8. Even though the new Start screen is more powerful and easy-to-use, users are missing the old Start menu. We have previously shown how to skip the Start screen during logon and visit the desktop directly.
There are some tools available to customize and tweak the Start screen and Charms Bar but none of them help you disable Metro features. Windows 8 users who are looking for a smart and easy workaround to completely disable Metro features will be glad to know that a tiny utility is now available to disable Start screen, and Charms.
PCBeta has released a small utility (we don’t want to name the tool here!) that enables you completely disable Metro features including the Charms and Start screen in a jiffy. In addition to the Charms bar and Start screen, it also disables the switch menu that appears when you move the mouse cursor to the left corner of the screen.
Using this utility is simple. Download and run the utility to disable all Metro features. The tool has not user interface. Just double-clicking on the tool to get your job done. To revert to the original settings, simply restart your PC. Users who would like to permanently disable the Metro need to move the exe file to the startup folder located in the following location:
Obviously, when you disable the Start screen, you won’t be able to launch programs from the Start screen and also the Start screen search feature won’t work. So, we suggest you pin your favourite programs to the Taskbar or create a shortcut of all programs on desktop or install ViStart program to get Windows 7-style Start menu before running this tool.
To revert to the original settings, you need to restart your PC. To restart your PC, you need to use the Alt + F4 keys as the tool disables Windows 8’s power menu as well. Please note that you need be registered member (registration is free) of PCBeta to download the utility.
