If you have been running Windows 7 on your personal computer, chances are high that you haven’t assigned a password for your user account. Whenever you start your PC, the boot process will stop at the login screen and you need to hit enter or click on your user account picture to see the desktop.
As you need to hit enter each time you start your PC, here is quick solution to skip the logon screen. Needless to say that this will save a few seconds as well.
Skip or disable the logon screen in Windows 7
Step 1. Type netplwiz in Start menu search box and hit enter.
Or
Open the Run dialog box. To do this, use Windows + R keyboard shortcut. And then enter control userpasswords2 in Run dialog box and hit enter.
Step 2. Under User Accounts dialog box, uncheck the box named Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
Step 3. Click Apply button to see Automatically Log On dialog box. If you have a password for your user account, simply enter the password and click ok. If you don’t have a password for your account, simply click Ok.
Step 4. You are done. Reboot your Windows 7. You should now directly see the desktop instead of the logon screen.
If you also own a Windows 10 PC, check out our how to automatically login in Windows 10 guide to skip or disable the lock/login screen.

Thank you so much for this! It worked perfectly. Since my computer takes a long time to be useable after login this will save me a lot of convenience.

After performing the steps outlined here, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit renders a Sign In Screen that states that the Password is incorrect and still displays the Administrator Icon and the User’s Icon. Clicking the User’s Icon and the arrow on the Password box is still required; no password notwithstanding. Is this a fault of Win 7 Pro (or?)?

Actually I lost my Windows 7 password and hope to remove it, so that I can login without password. Finally I use SmartKey Windows Password Recovery to remove the password. Then I can login Windows 7 without typing the password. You can Google Search “login windows 7 without password smartkey” to know more about it.

Hi, I followed the instructions as shown here.
But ever since, I have been unable to make changes to the computer! I seem to have lost my administrative rights. The ‘Yes’ button is no longer sensitive when I want to run a program and it asks for the administrator password. Please help!

Roman, it’s a good utility. But we are not sure if it works on Windows 7 or not. However, this guide is useful when you don’t want to use any third party software.

Isn’t Autologon from Sysinternals better?
Pasword is encrypted. Windows XP has the password to autologon in registry as plain text…
