How To Enable/Run Desktop Sidebar Gadgets With UAC Disabled In Windows 7
Posted March 2, 2009 – 5:09 pm in: Windows 7, Windows 7 GuidesEnabling and running desktop gadgets with UAC (User Account Control) turned off has become an issue in the Beta (Build 7000) version of Windows 7. Users can’t enable/run Windows Desktop Gadgets when the UAC (User Account Control) turned off.
Windows even doesn’t’ open the gadgets gallery with UAC turned off. Well, there might be a security reason behind this strong move by Microsoft, but it really annoys users.
Thankfully, there is a workaround for this issue. By doing this tweak, users should be able to enable/run Desktop Sidebar Gadgets even when the UAC turned off. Follow the below procedure to make it happen.
1. As usual, we type in regedit in Start menu search field and hit enter to open Windows Registry Editor.
2. Click, Yes for the UAC prompt (If you see any).
3. Move to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Sidebar \ Settings
4. Here, you need to create a new DWORD value (32-bit) named “AllowElevatedProcess”.
5. Next, double-click on the newly created “AllowElevatedProcess” and change the default value to “1”.
6. Close Windows Registry Editor. Now you should be able to see the change in Desktop Gadget behavior.
