How To: Prevent Themes From Changing Desktop Icons In Windows 7
Posted February 17, 2009 – 6:09 pm in: Windows 7, Windows 7 GuidesWindows 7 modifies the default desktop icons when you install a new theme that comes with customized desktop icons. If you are not aware, you can read my detailed “How to create themes in Windows 7” guide to get familiar with the new ‘themepack’ feature of Windows 7.
This feature comes in handy when you like the new theme and also integrated new desktop icons. There would be some instances where you like the theme but not the new customized icons.
You can restrict the themes from changing the default desktop icons in Windows 7. Follow the below procedure to restrict the theme from changing desktop icons.
1. Right-click on desktop and select Personalize.
2. Open the Change desktop icons link that is located at the top of the Task Pane (Left Pane).
3. Next, uncheck the option named “Allow themes to change desktop icons” to prevent themes from changing icons.
4. Click Apply.
5. You are done!
Note that you can also use the Restore Default button to use the default icons.
