Many users are asking how to remove evaluation copy (Or testing purpose only) watermark that appears on the bottom right of Windows 7 desktop. Generally, we need to edit system file to make it happen. But thankfully, we have a simple, clean and working patch that does the job perfectly.

windows7logo1

Before getting into the innards of the guide, it’s better to backup your system files since you are going edit user32.dll.mui system file using a small patch. Follow the steps given below to remove watermark from the Windows 7 desktop.

Procedure:

1. Download the patch from here (Thanks to deepxw for creating the patch).

2. Right-click on Removewatermark (.exe) file and select Run as administrator. Make sure that you have chosen RemovewatermarkX86.exe file, if you are using 32-bit Windows. Likewise choose RemovewatermarkX64.exe for 64-bit Windows.

3. Next, a command prompt will be opened asking your permission to continue. Press/type “Y” to continue patching process.

Command Prompt Asking Permission

4. Within few seconds, a successful message will be shown. Close Command Prompt window & reboot your system.

Water Mark Command Prompt

5. Enjoy!

If the watermark appears even after rebooting the machine, then follow the procedure below.

1. Type CMD in Start menu search field and hit enter Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt with admin rights. Alternatively, go to Start > All programs > Accessories. Right-click on Command Prompt entry, and select Run as administrator.

2. In the Command Prompt, type in mcbuilder.exe and hit enter. It may take a minute to finish the process. Now, close the Command Prompt window and reboot Windows 7.

Windows 7 watermark

3. You should see no watermark on your desktop now.

Note that this patch should work fine on all builds of Windows 7 including build 7057.

I used this and it made my copy of windows 7 not genuine, Im using build 7600

  46. Posted December 16, 2009 at 12:39 am | Permalink

    Hi,

It did NOT work for me. All it did (if at all) is remove the words “Windows 7 build 7600″ while keeping the rest of the watermark: “This copy of Windows is not genuine”. Every time I light up my PC I get the 2 intimidating windows asking me to go genuine and my desktop background is set to pitch black.

I think I’m gonna reinstall the whole thing.

    Any other solutions?

Do you have any other remedies against the annoying start up windows and the black desktop background?

“Do you have any other remedies against the annoying start up windows and the black desktop background?”

well, you could try getting a legal version of it? that usually helps.

Q = You must actiavte today? Windows 7 RTM shutdown 1 day?

Just installed the lastest windows 7 official RTM build I ran windows update and
a watermark appeared on the bottom right of the screen saying this copy of windows
is not genuine. After rebooting I have a black screen and a prompt telling me I
must activate windows today! What happened to the 30 day grace period?

Am I the only one with this problem?

SOLUTION = THE VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION :)

A = You have to open an elevated command prompt. That is, click Start and in the Start Search box, type cmd and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Click Continue on the User Account Control box.
Now in the command prompt window, type slmgr -rearm and press Enter.
(There is a space between slmgr and -).

Reboot if neccessary, the sage mista>>

What is is with people today? It seriously can’t ALL be the fault of the U.S. Education System. By like post 50, at the most, this solution had been solved, yet, over and over the same posts “How can I….” or even better the screaming “HELP!!!!!!!!!” people.

The simple answer is that those of you who obviously (a) didn’t take the time to READ from post 1 on down before repeating what the first of those with the problem said and (b) downloaded your copy from a torrent site rather than, oh pay for it (more on this below, deserve only this:

    1. Go to command prompt (right click and run as Admin)

    2. Type cd\windows

    3. Type FORMAT C:\

    4. Disregard warning about losing data, it’s a MS trick, and confirm the format.

    5. Sit back and watch the lovely program work it’s magic.

    6. When the screen goes black, get up, tell your parents/loved ones that you’re going out. Head to your local library (gasp you mean like, books? yeah, I mean books) and before you attempt to run (edit/hack/perform advanced programing), learn how to crawl (ask for help) and walk (when and how you go about asking for that help).

    7. Go to the reference librarian (yes, she’s the older lady in the funny sweater/jacket thing over there, be nice, you’re learning something valuable and doing a good deed to boot by letting the older generation continue to feel like their not the older generation, you’ll be there, soon enough) and ask her if she has the time (don’t freaking assume it, that’s insulting) to teach you how to, big concept here, CROSS-REFERENCE source materials. Pick a topic, I’ll recommend anything by or about Thomas Edison, and just sit and read a section, then go find the sources and cross references the section relies on for its statements of facts. Hopefully you’ll soon see why (a) I chose Thomas Edison and (b) that you learn to walk quite faster when you have to actually take the baby steps yourself. If your conclusion is that I recommended Thomas Edison for any of the individual myriad of his inventions, you’re not ready to walk yet… crawl back and read some more and this time, instead of concentrating on the specifics of WHAT you’re reading about, focus on the HOW’S that took place to get the WHAT done.

Regarding piracy, etc. I’m all for try-it-before-you-buy-it. Anyone with an iPhone, or knows someone that has one, is a liar if they don’t become a convert to this concept. But, seriously? Unless you really only downloaded your eval copy within the past 90 days, you know, and we all know, you are long past the try it stage. Microsoft finally caved a (relatively) short time ago and just let anyone in the world with a net connection start “trying it first”. No special groups only, or PR selected economically “depressed” inner-city types… ANYONE without regard to well, anything excpet signing up and registering. Ultimately, and it will never get reported on like this but there really is no other logival reason, that was respect to the OG crackers and hackers (of which Gates, and Jobs, and just about every other big time upper management weenie at the biggies (MSFT, Oracle, Cisco, Apple, etc.) was back in the day) because they reminded those now-big-time weenies where they came from, what their roots were. You think Apple and MSFT waere giving away eval copies to just anyone even 10 years ago? NOT. Think about it, 10 years ago. The world was worrying about Y2K issues and why the NSA couldn’t crack a fax line over 57k baud (hence no speeds allowed over 52k for the LONGEST time, even though the technology was there). We were LIGHT YEARS ahead of the 5.25 in. floppies that first booted up the computer (hard drive? is that some sexual joke or something?) and then stored our data. 10 years, really not that long, and do any of you possibly remember having to BUY a trial version. Yeah, cheap, but not fully functional, so what was the point anyway? Better to get a copy of the full, crack it, then see if you wanted to buy it.

So please, have some respect for yourself and if you’re thinking of typing “how do I get This Version of Windows is Not Genuine off my screen”, think about what you’re saying about yourself…..and portraying about the kind of person you really are. Yeah, none of us know who you are, but……. you do.

If you take the time and ask nicely and for the honest reason (whatever that might be, from no money to 90 days just wasn’t enough time to evaluate for you, with legitimate no BS excuses) to the right department, hell, MS will GIVE you a free copy. Yeah, not Ultimate, but, you don’t really need that anyway, and you know it.

I’m a PC and Windows was my idea ;)

Post number 59 by B Sage worked perfectly for me so far. The water mark, black desktop background and pop ups are all gone now! Cheers B Sage!

I’m not sure if it helps, but also uninstall the windows update KB971033(details below) and hide it from updates so that you do not install it again.

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB971033)

    Update type: Important

This update to Windows Activation Technologies detects activation exploits and tampering to key Windows system files. These exploits try to bypass regular Windows activation and are sometimes included within counterfeit copies of Windows.

For people with Windows 7 x64 build 7600 like me, where the patch cited in the original article didn’t work (version 0.5), I found an updated version of the patch (version 0.8) here:

    http://www.general-search.com/fileinfo/9927866

You will likely find this patch works better for you.

And for others who say that have a black screen on startup. Don’t forget that you need to reset the black screen back to a theme after you’ve reactivated windows (or removed the WAT). Windows doesn’t do it for you automatically. (Right-click on your desktop and select ‘personalize’)

I use Windows 7 x86 build 7600 (Ultimate). Link does not work, worse, after the patch I get a huge pop-up screen after starting up telling me that my version is a copy…

Joe, can u share the new 32bit version for build 7600? Cheers!

i found a solution for ppl using RC 7600
step 1: turn OFF your Windows updates
step 2: get some valid product key (you may use software like w7lxe.exe provided in most pirated CDs)
step 3: open cmd in administrator mode
(click Start and in the Start Search box, type cmd and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Click Continue on the User Account Control box.
step 4:Now in the command prompt window, type
    slmgr /ipk
    step 5:press enter and wait

NOTE : type in the product key you searched in place of

dont turn on ur windows update

  106. Posted December 18, 2010 at 6:42 am | Permalink

I will like you to specify two things:
1.- If you don’t run it as administrator, your Windows gets destroyed
2.- It can mess up a little with the boot, so remember to boot from the disk where Windows is installed.

Both things happened to me. That’s it.
    Thank you for the solution

I believe this made my computers internet connection go really slowly. Each time i open up any web browser it goes terribly slow! When I try to download anything it’s like 3.6KB/sec and I have a 5mbit connection. I tried downloading a torrent it it worked great with 600KB/sec.

My AVG found a bunch of trojans and I’m not quite sure if I got them all removed. Thanks for fucking up my PC.

    3. Install Windows Loader 1.9.7 by Daz
    4. Reboot
    5. Open a command prompt (run as administrator) and excecute the following:

    6. Reboot
    7. Hide kb971033 so Windows Update won’t install it again

    BSages method DOES work. Tried it today on 7 Ultimate, Build 7601 and have had no problems. At the risk of repeating him, do the following, in THIS order;
    1. Open Control Centre, then Action Centre, select Windows Update, then INSTALLED UPDATES.
    2. Locate Windows Update KB 971033, right click, then Uninstall. Confirm as necessary.
    3. Click Start, type “cmd” in search box, right click “cmd” in results pane, select “Run as Administrator”.
    4. Type the following: slmgr (now press the space bar), and then type -(dash)rearm. LEAVE A SPACE BETWEEN THE r AND THE DASH, OR IT WON’T WORK!!
    5. Wait for the Windows Script Host window to open, then select OK.
    6. Reboot, then reboot again.
    7. At this point you will still have a black screen, but the watermark should now be gone.
    8. Select your desktop background as you would normally.
    9. Open Control Centre, then System. Near the bottom of that window, it should say that “Windows is Activated” and also have a Product ID number or OEM number.
    10. Navigate to Windows Update. If the Update KB971033 is there, right click it and select HIDE. DO NOT INSTALL!!
    11. In the Change Settings part of Windows Update, change the setting to “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”.
    12. Update as required, but DO NOT install update KB971033 if it appears in the list.

For anyone having trouble with the error “slmgr is not recognised as an internal or external command”, make sure you’re running the command prompt as administrator. If it still won’t work using the command line stated, try typing “slmgr.vbs -rearm”. (leaving out the “, and leaving a space between .vbs and -rearm.
Don’t forget to exit command prompt, then re-boot TWICE when finished
    Hope this helps.

  165. Malasky
    Posted July 13, 2011 at 12:27 pm | Permalink

In Windows Update there is a choice to restore hidden updates. You could try that. The 971033 update should be near the bottom of the list in installed updates.

  166. Malasky
    Posted July 13, 2011 at 12:47 pm | Permalink

Forget that last comment. You need to uninstall the update from an elevated command prompt. Open an elevated command prompt ant type the following to uninstall the update: wusa.exe/uninstall/kb971033. Then hit ENTER. This should uninstall the update. The carry on with the rest of the process.

  167. Donald

Donald, do you have SP1 installed? If so, the 971033 update maybe hidden in there, and you may need to uninstall SP1 before you can access the 971033 update.

  169. Malasky

Or try a system restore to a point before SP1 was installed, and then try.
