I followed steps 1 and 2 above and it only removed the first two lines leaving “this copy of windows is not genuine” at the bottom of the screen.

Sage’s step (comment 58) worked like a charm in removing the watermark, although the pop up at start up is still there.

The first advice didnt help.
The second advice i tried, but when i typed in mcbuilder.exe nothing happended? I got a build 7601 problem.
Please help.

Or try a system restore to a point before SP1 was installed, and then try.

Donald, do you have SP1 installed? If so, the 971033 update maybe hidden in there, and you may need to uninstall SP1 before you can access the 971033 update.

Tried that but it didn’t help. Still I get “slmgr is not recognised as an internal or external command”. Watermark has been gone for some time but I still get the genuine stuff in the opening.

Forget that last comment. You need to uninstall the update from an elevated command prompt. Open an elevated command prompt ant type the following to uninstall the update: wusa.exe/uninstall/kb971033. Then hit ENTER. This should uninstall the update. The carry on with the rest of the process.

In Windows Update there is a choice to restore hidden updates. You could try that. The 971033 update should be near the bottom of the list in installed updates.

I can see Windows Update KB 971033 in update history but can’t find it from the installed updates. So slmgr -rearm thing doesn’t work for me. Any solution in this problem?

it worked! Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7600, took me a few tries, but here’s exactly what I did: type CMD into Start Search, press Cntrl + Shift + Enter, type “slmgr -rearm” press Enter, rebooted, It still had the unGenuine notice after reboot, then I rebooted again and this time without the notice and watermark! Thanks posters.
