Quickly Launch Files & Programs With Launchy

Are you tired of browsing through Start menu to launch a specific program? Would like to open files and folders without digging through hundreds of folders? I will bet almost no one will say NO to the above two questions. In fact who doesn’t like to do things quickly these days right?

Although Vista has come up with a new feature labeled Start menu search, it’s still a painful process to launch any obscure file or folder quickly. Last evening when I was going through my software bookmarks, I found a cool utility which supposed to make launching program, file and folder an easy task.

The name is Launchy, a freeware. In author’s words, Launchy is the most efficient way to open files, folders, websites and programs on your computer.

The best part is that it doesn’t make your desktop clutter either by lying in system tray or in taskbar, instead it hides in the background until you press Alt+ Spacebar hot key. Once Launchy is launched just input the name of the program by typing in the box without giving your attention to capitalization and punctuation.

Launchy will show you a list of programs related to the name in the right hand box, hit enter to launch any specific program that you are looking for. Incase your desired program is not listed, worry not. Launchy will also display a list of alternative suggestions to choose from. Once you hit enter to launch the program Launch will disappear again in the background until you need it next. You can even use the same Alt+ Spacebar combo to hide Launchy.

By default Launchy doesn’t index all folders and files in your system. To index files and folders, right click on Launchy and select options and then go to the Catalog tab. In the catalog tab use “+”sign to add directories. Install additional official plugins to add new web searching functions.

You can also add different file types, themes and plugins in the options window. There are many hidden features which can be used to fine tune this awesome program.
