Secunia – Scan, Detect, & Update Vulnerable Programs
Posted January 6, 2009 – 11:06 am in: Freeware, SoftwareA recent study reveals that 98 out of 100 users have one or more insecure programs installed on their Windows machine. Did you ever think about the security vulnerability by third-party software that you install even without reading the license agreement.
We always bash Microsoft for vulnerability problem despite installing third-party insecure programs ourselves. We also don’t bother to update all our installed programs when there is a security update is available and then curse Microsoft as if it was theirs duty to update our system.
It’s really hard to keep tab on all the running programs and available updates especially if you have installed enough programs. Keeping all these programs updated requires a lot of work on a regular basis. Worry not. For every problem there is a solution. There is a free utility available to monitor the available updates for all your third-party programs.
Secunia is a freeware utility that scans, detects, and updates vulnerable third-party programs which exposes you to security threats. The program is very small and can be downloaded from the below link.
Once you install and run the program Secunia will scan your PC and will give the list of insecure programs on your PC. Secunia’s report list includes the name of insecure program, threat level, solution and forum help options to know about the insecure program.
Click on the solution button to download the available updates/patches for the insecure program. You can also select the advanced option at the top-right corner of the program for in-depth report. Clicking on the insecure or end-of-life or patched programs will give detailed list of the programs. Again click on any listed program to get the available solutions and tools to fix particular program.
It is important to note, that the purpose of the Secunia PSI is to detect and determine if security threats, posed by vulnerable programs, are present on your PC. The actual solutions to the security threats come from the vendors of your programs.
At a mere of 531KB, Secunia Personal Software Inspector is extremely small and useful to keep your PC away from hackers!
