We here at IntoWindows are big fans of Windows tweaking utilities. In the past, we reviewed hundreds of free tools to tweak and customize Windows. Back in Feb 2010, we first reviewed the Tweak Me! tool. A lot has been changed since then, so have decided to look at the software again and check the newly added tweaks.
Tweak Me! is a free tweaking application for XP, Vista, Windows 7 as well as Windows 8. It offers hundreds of tweaks to clean, secure, personalize, and improve the overall performance of Windows operating system.
Once you have installed, whenever you launch the tool, it offers an option to create a system restore point before actually launching the Tweak Me! application. Tweaks are available to fine-tune Action Center, Aero, AntiSpy, Internet Explorer, Performance, Security, User Account Control, Windows, Windows Media Player, and Windows Update. The current version (18.104.22.168) of Tweak Me! includes a total of 172 tweaks and has a few Windows 8 specific tweaks as well.
Some useful tweaks:
# Enable/Disable first run
# Enable/Disable Aero Peek
# Enable/Disable Aero on Home Basic edition
# Disable geolocation
# Disable update check (Windows 8 only)
# Auto-refresh Windows Explorer
# Disable indexing service
# Speed up taskbar thumbnails
# Deny access to the display settings
# Disable Group Policy objects
# Disable removable storage devices
# Restrict access to system restore settings
Besides, it also includes a clean-up utility to quickly empty Windows and third-party applications, including web browsers. It can clean-up Windows burning cache, recycle bin, sticky notes, recent history, logs, general cache, wallpaper history, website cache, temporary Windows files, and temporary user files.
The Startup tool lets you remove unnecessary programs from the startup and improve Windows boot time. Context Menu cleaner is another handy feature of Tweak Me!. With Context Menu cleaner, you can remove application entries from desktop context menu, file and folder context menu and drive context menu.
In addition to all those tweaks, Tweak Me! also includes tweaks if you have a PC with Solid State Drive (SSD). Under SSD Optimization, you can see options to enable/disable TRIM support, disable defragmentation, disable boot-defrag, and disable prefetch.
Overall, it’s a quality tweaking tool and supports both x86 and x64 versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Do note that the setup recommends you install Nitro PDF Reader in the middle of the installation. Select “I do not want to install Nitro PDF Reader” option and click Next button to install Tweak Me! without Nitro PDF Reader.
