Software developers regularly release updates to add new features, fix security issues, and improve performance. While some programs such as EverNote & GOM Player notify you whenever an update is available, some other programs especially web browsers get updated automatically to the newest version and doesn’t require manual intervention.

But then there are some software that needs to be updated manually by clicking on check for updates option in the help menu. Some small programs don’t even have the check for updates option. For these programs, the user needs to open the developer’s page to download and install the latest version.

Users who have installed hundreds of programs to accomplish various tasks always find it difficult to update all programs one by one. If you are one of those users, you must try out the brilliant Secunia PSI software.

Secunia PSI

Secunia PSI (Personal Software Inspector) is a free program designed to help you keep all installed programs on your PC up to date. Secunia PSI first scans your system for installed programs and then checks the software version on your PC against the version available on the developer’s page and then updates the program to the newest version.

The program supports thousands of popular software and updates them without interrupting your work.

When you run Secunia, it scans your system for outdated programs, including EXE, OCX, and DLL files and  tries to update them automatically. If a program can’t be updated automatically and requires manual intervention, it will notify you to manually update the program by clicking on Click to update option.

Secunia shows all installed programs on the home screen. Users can view the recently updated programs by clicking on the history option.

With millions of downloads, Secunia PSI is easily the best available program to keep your applications up to date. By default Secunia starts with Windows and tries to update outdated programs automatically. If you don’t want to automatically update programs, you can disable these features under settings.

Secunia PSI is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Vista (SP1 or later), and Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. In our test, the latest version performed flawlessly on Windows 8 as well. Windows 8 users note that Secunia PSI doesn’t update your metro apps installed from Windows Store. To update metro apps, please check out our how to update metro apps in Windows 8 guide.

Yes, I thought Secunia was a lovely piece of software when I recently discovered it….However, I now know that it is slow to start up and it won’t update my programs. “Click to Update” and it sits idle as the program is grayed out. I once got on my computer to find them all updated and a security score of 100%! Yet, the symptoms returned and it seems the same stubborn programs were not actually updated. I guess I’ll just have to update them the old-fashioned way. It is handy for quickly recognizing what is out of date though.
