With the release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview, software developers have started updating and releasing their software for Windows 8. The developers of Vista Codecs, and the popular Windows 7 Codecs have just released the first version of Windows 8 Codecs package and is now available for download.

Windows 8 Codecs package includes popular audio and video codecs. By installing the package you can easily play popular audio and video formats such as amr, mpc, ofr, divx, mka, flac, evo, flv, mkv, xvid, and rmvb in your favorite media player. Windows 8 Codecs is a must have for users who use in-built Windows Media Player to play audio and video files, as it doesn’t support many popular video formats.

It also enables the preview pane for all video file types and full color thumbnails for FLV and MKV formats. After installing the package, you will be able add popular video file types to Windows Media Player playlist using a right-click.

Do note that Windows 8 Codecs package doesn’t contain a media player. The setup file of Windows 8 Codecs lets you choose codes that you want to install. We recommend you uninstall any codec package that you have previously installed before running Windows 8 Codecs setup.

Also note that, with default settings, the setup installs WeatherBug software (it’s a free software that displays temperature on your taskbar). If you are not interested in WeatherBug, uncheck Install WeatherBug box and click next button.

Windows 8 Codecs is freeware and supports both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 8. SmartScreen filter in Windows 8 may display “Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk” warning while launching the setup. Just click on More info and then click Run anyway button to continue installing Windows 8 Codecs.

Visit the download page to see full list of supported codecs.
