Adobe Photoshop is one of the best software out there for image editing and optimization tasks. Even though it’s a paid software and plenty of free alternatives around, Photoshop continues to be the most popular image editing software out there for Windows. Amid plans to replace its Creative Suite software with a subscription-based Creative Cloud service, the company has released its first Modern UI app for Windows 8.
Adobe recently released Adobe Photoshop Express app for Windows 8 and is available in the official Windows Store. PC users who own an Android or iOS device probably familiar with Photoshop Express name, as this app has been available for those mobile operating systems for over a year now.
As with Android and iOS versions, Windows 8 version of Photoshop Express is also free but supports in-app purchases to add more feature and options. The interface of the app is excellent and goes very well with Windows 8’s Modern UI. With Photoshop Express, one can quickly edit and enhance pictures.
This initial version of Photoshop Express lets you crop, rotate, straighten, and flip your photos and also comes with Auto-Fix feature to set brightness, exposure, and shadows. There are over 15 eye-catching filters to add cool effects to your photos.
Upon launching the app for the first time, you’ll see Getting started with the new Photoshop Express app. You can either go through the Getting started guide to know about features or simply click or tap the Skip button located at the upper-right to skip the guide and start using the app. The home screen of the app displays three large tiles: Pictures Library, Adobe Revel, and Camera.
Click or tap the Pictures Library to browse your PC, and then open a picture that you would like to edit or enhance using Photoshop Express. A click or tap on Adobe Revel tile lets you access or create your Adobe Revel account. If you don’t have one, you can use your Facebook or Google account to create Adobe Revel account. Click on the Camera tile to capture an image from the webcam and edit it using available functions.
Adobe Photoshop Express lets you easily share edited pictures on Facebook. It even lets you upload your pictures to Adobe Revel account so that you can easily access them from other devices such as iPhone and iPad. To share picture on Facebook or upload to Revel, click or tap Save/Share button located at the bottom-right of the screen.
While Adobe Photoshop Express is free, Looks pack and Noise Reduction pack are available as in-app purchases. That is, noise reduction and one-touch looks filters can be added by purchasing those feature packs from the Windows Store. In simple words, you can only preview the Noise Reduction feature and need to purchase the Noise Reduction pack to be able save an image after applying noise reduction filters.
Ability to open pictures from your SkyDrive account as well as search and open pictures from Bing search is another awesome feature of the app.
Overall, it’s a nice app from Adobe for Windows 8. That said, there are a few shortcomings in the current version. For instance, Photoshop Express doesn’t support PNG format, can’t save changes to an existing image (it creates a new file), doesn’t support saving images to Flickr or Dropbox.
Users who’re running Windows 8 or Windows RT on a tablet will definitely find this app useful.
