The desktop gadget concept was originally introduced with Windows Vista and it’s been enhanced in Windows 7. In Windows 7, gadgets can be placed anywhere on the desktop and it now includes a gadget manager to access all installed gadgets from one place.
Gadgets are small apps that offer quick access to news, drives/folders, and other information right on the desktop. For example, you can use a the default CPU Meter gadget to view your system performance without opening the Task Manager.
