Earlier this year, Laplink Software released Windows 8 Beta Assistant software to easily move applications, files, and settings from your old Windows 7 PC to the Windows 8 Preview machine without deleting anything from the old PC. The Beta Assistant was free only for early adopters who were test driving preview versions of Windows 8.
The Beta Assistant doesn’t work on Windows 8 RTM and users need to purchase a copy of Laplink PCmover to migrate programs and files to final version of Windows 8.
Users who love PCmover software will be glad to know about the availability of Laplink PCmover free software. For those who haven’t used Laplink PCmover before, it’s the only software available for Windows to move programs, files, and settings from one PC to another without deleting programs, files, and settings from the old one.
The free version of Laplink PCmover has some limitations and lacks many powerful features of the full version. With the PCmover free version you can move up to a maximum of three applications from one PC to another. Another catch is that the free version moves files and settings from only the currently logged-on user. That is, unlike the paid version, the free version doesn’t move files and settings from all users. The free version sports the same familiar user interface of the Beta Assistant and other versions.
Just like thousands of freeware out there, Laplink PCmover free also tries to install Ask Toolbar, tries to set Ask.com as your browser home page during the product installation. Also note that both computers must be on the Local Area Network (LAN), or connected through Laplink Ethernet or USB cable. So, in simple words, unlike the paid version, you can’t use a USB storage drive to move your data.
Using this program is fairly simple. Just download, run the program, and follow the on-screen instructions. You need to install PCmover on both old and new PC to be able to migrate programs and settings from old PC to new one. The operating system on the new PC (destination PC) must be same or newer than the OS on the old PC (source PC). That is, for instance, you can migrate applications, files, and settings from Vista to Windows 7 but you can’t move programs, files and settings from Windows 7 to Vista.
PCmover free is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and also good old Windows XP. In our test, it performed flawlessly on Windows 8 RTM as well.
The program is handy for users who don’t mind installing above mentioned programs and have very small number of programs to move to the new PC. If you are a looking for an alternative to PCmover, unfortunately, not even a single software available.
