We have talked about 7-Zip software here on IntoWindows umpteen number of times. As everyone knows, it’s one of the best if not the best free compression utility out there for Windows operating system. The software supports a wide range of compression formats.
Although we must give full credit to Igor Pavlov for developing this excellent piece of software, there is certainly room for improvement. For instance, whenever I switch from WinRAR to 7-Zip to extract compressed files, I notice that 7-Zip does not automatically open the output folder after completing the extraction. In other words, when you extract the contents of a compressed file to a location, 7-Zip doesn’t automatically open up that location after extracting the contents of the file to the selected location, forcing us to manually navigate to the location.
Easy 7-Zip for Windows
While searching for a way to force 7-Zip automatically open up the output folder after extraction, I came across Easy 7-Zip software.
Basically Easy 7-Zip is improved version of 7-Zip. Easy 7-Zip uses the source code of 7-Zip but has been tweaked to include new features and improvements. In other words, in addition to all the features offered by 7-Zip, Easy 7-Zip includes a bunch of small but handy features and options.
Unlike 7-Zip, Easy 7-Zip automatically opens up the destination folder after the extraction. This is the biggest single most important feature for me. It adds icons to context menu icons, making it easier to recognize.
Easy 7-Zip offers following features:
# Icons to context menu options
# Adds Open output folder and close 7-Zip option to Extract dialog
# Adds Delete source archive option to Extract dialog
# Shows free and total space of output drive
# Option to minimize to system tray and the system tray icon shows percent of progress
# Single installer for both 32-bit and 64-bit
# Option to easily associate 7-Zip with more file types
The Extract dialog has more options compared to the original 7-Zip. You can find Open output folder and delete source archive options here. The same Extract dialog now shows free and total space available on the output drive, a very useful feature when extracting large compressed files.
In addition to those options, the Extract dialog includes a Filename button as well. What this does is, when the button is clicked, Easy 7-Zip creates a folder of the selected file name and extracts the context to this folder. For instance, if the name of the file is Windows.zip and selected output location is H: \Easy, upon clicking the Filename button, Easy 7-Zip creates a folder named Windows under H: \Easy and extracts file contents to that folder for easy identification.
Last but not the least, Easy 7-Zip is offered in a new installer. Unlike 7-Zip, the installer of Easy 7-Zip includes the setup files for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and automatically installs the right version of the software. In other words, Easy 7-Zip automatically installs 32-bit version on x86 Windows and 64-bit version on x64 Windows.
