About a month ago, in an article titled how to disable webcam in Windows, we talked about why you should consider disabling the webcam when not being used and how to disable the built-in or USB webcam using Device Manager.
While a lot of people prefer the good old Device Manager and might not mind spending a few more minutes to enable or disable the webcam, an equal number of users like to quickly turn on or off the webcam in Windows with the help of an easy-to-use software.
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users who would like to quickly enable or disable webcam with a software can now download a free utility called Webcam On-Off.
Webcam On-Off is a free software from the maker of Easy Context Menu. As the name suggest, this freeware is designed to help you quickly turn on or off the webcam without navigating to Windows Device Manager.
To start with, Webcam On-Off is a portable utility and doesn’t require an installation. The tool, after detecting your video device, shows the status of the device. If the webcam is turned off, you’ll see Disabled as the status right next to the webcam entry. And if it’s turned on, Enabled text will appear as the status.
To turn on or off the webcam, simply click the Enable or Disable button. And if you want to check if the webcam is working fine, simply click the Webcam button to see the preview. While previewing the webcam, you can zoom in, zoom out, or save the photo of the image appearing in the webcam. Click the Settings button to adjust various settings of the webcam, including brightness, contrast, sharpness, gamma, and sharpness.
If you’re getting “Webcam cannot be disabled! Webcam is currently is use” error while trying to disable the camera, please close all running programs and attempt again. If the program shows the same error even after closing all programs, you may need to reboot your PC once.
And if the program is not detecting your webcam, please visit the download page and leave a comment to get helpful suggestions from the developer.
