3 Ways To Check Folder Size In Windows 11

None of the views in Windows 11 File Explorer display folder size by default. That is, the File Explorer does not display folder sizes next to folders.

The File Explorer displays file sizes in the ‘Size’ column when the ‘Details’ view is selected. However, the folder size is not displayed as Windows File Explorer does not support showing folder sizes by default.

If you need to check the size of a folder, you need to use one of the methods given below.

Method 1 of 3

Check the size of a folder using the tooltip feature in Windows 11

Step 1: Navigate to the location of the folder whose size you want to know.

Step 2: Move the mouse cursor over the folder or use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select the folder to see the tooltip (a small pop-up box) that shows the size of the folder, the date of creation, and the files/sub-folders present in the folder.

Method 2 of 3

Check the size of a folder via folder properties in Windows 11

Step 1: Right-click the folder whose size you are interested in and then click ‘Properties’ to open the folder properties dialog.

Step 2: Under the ‘General’ tab, the ‘Size’ field shows the actual size of the folder. You can safely ignore the size of the folder in the ‘Size on disk’ field.

Method 3 of 3

Use keyboard shortcuts to check the size of a folder in Windows 11

Step 1: Use the arrow keys to select the folder.

Step 2: Once the folder is selected, simultaneously press Alt and Enter keys to open the folder properties dialog.

Step 3: Here, refer to the ‘Size’ field to know the actual size of the folder.
