3 Ways To Check Folder Size In Windows 11 File Explorer

Last Updated on February 6, 2025 by admin Leave a Comment

The inability to show folder size by default in File Explorer is one of the shortcomings of the Windows operating system, including the latest Windows 11.

The Windows 11 File Explorer offers eight different views. However, none of the views can show folder size by default. For instance, the Details view shows file sizes by default in the Size column; however, the same view does not display sizes for folders.

Windows File Explorer might not show the folder size by default, most likely to improve File Explorer’s loading time.

Although there is no workaround to configure the File Explorer to show folder sizes by default, Windows 11 offers multiple ways to check the size of folders. With a couple of clicks, you can check the size of a folder.

The following are the three easy ways to check the size of folders in Windows 11.

Method 1 of 3

Check the size of a folder in Windows 11

Step 1: Perform a right-click on the folder and then click Properties to open the Properties dialog.

Method 2 of 3

Check the size of a folder using a keyboard shortcut in Windows 11

Step 1: Use the arrow keys (and the Tab key if required) to navigate to the folder whose size you want to check.

Step 2: Once the folder is selected, simultaneously press Alt and Enter keys (Alt + Enter) to open the selected folder’s properties dialog.

Step 3: The Size field shows the folder size under the General tab.

Method 3 of 3

Use the folder tip to check the size of a folder in Windows 11

Step 1: Hover the mouse pointer over the folder to reveal the folder tip, which displays the folder size along with some other information, such as the last modified date and name of files or subfolders. Alternatively, you can also use the arrow and Tab keys to select a folder, which automatically brings up the folder tip.

NOTE: If this is not working, open Folder Options (use search to open it quickly), and then turn on Display file size information in folder tips under the View tab.

Can we make the Windows 11 File Explorer show folder size by default?

Windows 11 does not offer an option to display folder size in File Explorer by default. Unfortunately, there is no third-party software that can add this functionality to the File Explorer. You need to use the above mentioned methods to know the size of folders.
