How To Change Laptop Lid Open Action In Windows 10

Last Updated on December 9, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

On most modern laptops, you don’t need to press the power button to turn them on. They automatically turn on upon opening the lid (built-in display).

The feature makes sense as it helps you avoid manually pressing the power button to turn on the laptop. Besides that, it makes turning on the laptop a bit faster as you are skipping a step.

If your laptop doesn’t automatically wake up when you open its lid or you want to prevent Windows 10 from automatically turning on the laptop upon opening the lid, you can do so under power settings.

Mind that many older laptops, as well as some new laptops, might not support this feature because of hardware and driver limitations. That said, you can give it a try!

Here is how to change what happens when you open the laptop lid running Windows 10 operating system.

Change what happens when you open the laptop lid

Step 1: Open the Settings app. Navigate to System > Power & sleep page.

Step 2: In the Related settings section, click the Additional power settings link. Clicking this link opens the classic Power Options window.

If the Lid open action is not showing up, it’s likely because it’s hidden. You need to run a command from the elevated Command Prompt to show the Lid open action.

Step 1: Run the Command Prompt as an administrator.

Step 2: At the Command Prompt, copy, and paste the following command and then hit the Enter key.

powercfg -attributes SUB_BUTTONS 99ff10e7-23b1-4c07-a9d1-5c3206d741b4 -ATTRIB_HIDE

Executing the above command will add the Lid open action to the Power Options dialog.

Step 3: Follow the directions mentioned in Step 4 & Step 5 of the guide above to change what happens when you open the laptop lid.

If the above command didn’t add the Lid open action option, check the BIOS settings. On some older laptops, there is an option to define what happens when you open the laptop lid.

To use the Windows 10 laptop with the lid closed, refer to how to run the laptop with the lid closed article.
