Are you getting “Your OneDrive folder can’t be created in the location you selected” error message on your Windows 10 PC? Here is why you are getting the error message and solution for the problem.
Many Windows 10 users have been complaining about “Your OneDrive folder can’t be created in the location you selected” error with “The location you were trying to create OneDrive folder belongs to drive with an unsupported file system. To have OneDrive use a different location, click Set up OneDrive and point OneDrive to an NTFS drive. To use the existing location with OneDrive, you need to format it with NTFS and then click Set up OneDrive to continue your account” description.
As the error description says, the error appears if you created the OneDrive folder on a drive formatted with a file system other than NTFS. That is, if you saved OneDrive folder on a drive formatted with FAT32, exFAT, or ReFS file system, you get the above error.
The best and easiest way to fix the error is to move the OneDrive folder to a drive formatted with the NTFS file system. By default, the OneDrive creates its folder under your user profile folder (C:\Users\YourUserName). If you don’t know, you can easily move the OneDrive folder. Here is how to do just that.
Workarounds to the OneDrive error
Step 1: When the error dialog shows up, click Set up OneDrive button to open Set up OneDrive dialog. If the error dialog is not appearing now, simply double-click on the OneDrive icon in the notification area.
Step 2: Fill in your Microsoft account email address. Click Sign in button.
Step 3: Type your password for the account. Click Sign in to proceed further.
Step 4: When you see the following screen, click Change location link and select a location on a drive formatted with NTFS.
Tip: You can check the file system of a drive by right-clicking on the drive icon in This PC and then clicking Properties (refer to the picture below).
Step 5: From here on, follow the usual on-screen instructions to set up your OneDrive.
What if you don’t have an NTFS drive?
If there is only one drive on your PC and it’s formatted with FAT32, exFAT or ReFS, you have no option but to format the drive again with NTFS and reinstall Windows 10. Formatting the drive will remove Windows 10 operating system as well as other data on the drive. If you are wondering, you don’t need to reactivate Windows 10 after the reinstall on the same PC. Although there are ways to convert FAT to NTFS without data loss, it’s a good idea to back up all data before trying to convert existing drive to NTFS.
If you have only one drive formatted with FAT32 but have plenty of space on it, you can shrink the system partition to gain some unallocated space and then create a new drive formatted with NTFS out of the unallocated space.
