On a PC running Windows 11, all files downloaded via web browsers and many other software are automatically saved to a folder called Downloads.
The Downloads folder can quickly swell up, depending on the number and size of downloaded files, and consume a significant amount of space.
If your Windows 11 installation drive is running out of free space and the Downloads folder occupies a large amount of space, you can consider relocating the Downloads folder to another drive. Many users often consider moving the Downloads folder to avoid deleting important downloaded files during the Windows 11 reinstallation.
Luckily, you do not need to edit the Registry or use third-party software to move the Downloads folder. Windows 11, like previous versions, offers an easy way to move the Downloads folder.
Move the Downloads folder to another drive in Windows 11
Step 1: Open the File Explorer.
Step 2: Right-click the Downloads folder’s entry in the left pane and then click Properties. This will open the Downloads properties dialog.
Step 3: Here, switch to the Location tab.
Step 4: Click the Move button, select the location where you would like to move the Downloads folder, and then click the Select Folder button.
NOTE: Although you can move the Downloads folder to any location, we recommend that you move it to a drive where you have sufficient free space.
Step 5: Finally, click the Apply button to begin moving the Downloads folder to the new location. Click the Yes button when asked for confirmation.
