In Windows 8, Start screen is the first thing that you see after logging in. Instead of the legacy desktop, you are greeted with the tiled Start screen where you can see information about your Facebook, Twitter, Weather and many other things without launching apps.
To switch to the desktop mode, one needs to click on the Desktop tile present on the Start screen. One can also move to desktop by clicking on the desktop preview that appears when you move the mouse cursor to the lower-left corner of the screen.
