How To Turn On Windows 10/11 Laptop Without Opening Lid

Last Updated on July 17, 2024 by admin Leave a Comment

Have you connected an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse to your Windows 10/11 laptop and now want to turn it on without opening its lid? Would you like to turn on your laptop without pressing the power button or opening the lid? If yes, this guide will help you.

You probably already know we can configure Windows 10/11 to wake up from sleep mode using an external keyboard or mouse. However, it’s not possible to turn on a shutdown laptop by pressing a key on the external keyboard or touching the trackpad or mouse. So, how do we turn on a laptop without opening its lid?

Since Windows 10/11 (or any other operating system) does not offer a direct way to turn on a laptop without opening the lid, we use a workaround available in UEFI/BIOS to force your Windows 10/11-running laptop to turn on without opening its lid.

Most laptops available today offer an option in the BIOS/UEFI, which, when enabled, automatically turns on your laptop once you connect your laptop to a power source. In other words, when you connect your laptop to a power source and switch it on, your laptop will turn on automatically. Cool, isn’t it?

By utilizing this feature, you can turn on a laptop even if it’s in a shutdown or hibernate state. Needless to say, the laptop will not turn off automatically when you disconnect it from the power source. You will have to manually hibernate or shut it down.

Important: This method requires you to change the BIOS/UEFI default settings. Please proceed with caution.

Turn on a laptop from shutdown or hibernate state without opening the lid

Step 1: Save your work and close all running apps. Restart your computer.

Step 2: During the reboot, press the appropriate key to get into the BIOS/UEFI. Note that the key that needs to be pressed to enter the UEFI/BIOS is different from manufacturer to manufacturer. For instance, on my Lenovo ThinkPad T480, I need to press the Enter key during the boot and then press the F1 key. Most OEMs use the F1, F2, or F11 keys to boot into the BIOS/UEFI. Please search the internet for the exact key.

Step 3: Here, look for the Power section. Now, look for an option called Power On with AC Attach or something similar. Enable the option. To enable it, you need to select it using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the Enter key.

NOTE: If you cannot find the option, please contact your PC manufacturer. Do not change the setting if you are not sure what it does.

Step 4: Finally, click the F10 (BIOS) or click the appropriate button (UEFI) to save the changes. That’s it!

Step 5: Your PC will restart now. You may now login to your account and start using your computer. From now onwards, your laptop will turn on whenever you turn on the power socket switch or connect your laptop to a power source.
