Is It Safe To Delete Files From Downloads Folder In Windows 11?

A reader who recently started using Windows 11 asked us if it is safe to delete files from the Downloads folder to free up disk space. In this article, we will discuss what the Downloads folder is in the Windows operating system and how safe it is to delete files from there.

What is the Downloads folder in Windows 11/10?

On a PC running any recent version of Windows, including the newest Windows 11, web browsers save all downloaded files to the Downloads folder. For instance, device drivers downloaded from your PC manufacturer’s website go straight to the Downloads folder.

Because all downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder, it fills up quite fast if you often download files from the internet. After a while, you might want to delete files that are no longer required to organize the files in the Downloads folder.

Is it safe to delete files from the Downloads folder in Windows 11/10?

While it is completely safe to delete files from the Downloads folder, you might end up losing files that you might want when you delete all files at once. For instance, you might not want to delete that ebook PDF file that you downloaded from the internet.

App installers and Windows 11/10 ISO files are completely safe to delete, as they can always be downloaded again from the internet.

So, we recommend opening each file (document files, specifically) or at least reading the file name before deleting it to avoid deleting files you might not want to.

Finally, if you have too many large files in the Downloads folder that you do not want to delete, we recommend moving the Downloads folder to another drive to free up valuable disk space on your Windows installation drive, as the Downloads folder is located on the Windows 11/10 install drive.

Is there a safe way to delete files from the Downloads folder in Windows 11?

Deleted files are hard to recover, unless you have deleted them to the Recycle Bin. We recommend deleting files to the Recycle Bin so that you can restore files, even if you accidentally delete files. To do that, right-click the file you want to delete and then click the Delete option. Do not use the Shift + Delete keyboard shortcut, as it bypasses the Recycle Bin.

Last but not least, we recommend you check if Windows 11 is configured to automatically delete old files from the Downloads folder to avoid losing crucial files.
