The Windows 10 upgrade has not been a smooth one for all PC users. Many Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users who upgraded to Windows 10 have been experiencing a variety of issues after the upgrade. While Microsoft has ironed out many of the problems in recent updates, a small percent of users still experiencing issues.
Many users have reported about the missing CD/DVD drive icon after upgrading to Windows 10. According to users, the CD/DVD drive icon doesn’t appear either in This PC or navigation pane of File Explorer (Windows Explorer) after the upgrade.
Users who have performed a clean install of Windows 10 have also reported that Windows 10 is not detecting CD/DVD drive. Luckily, fixing the missing CD/DVD drive icon is not a hard job. You can restore the missing CD/DVD drive icon in less than 5 minutes.
If the CD/DVD drive icon is missing from This PC or File Explorer, please follow the directions mentioned in one of the two given below methods to restore the missing CD/DVD icon in Windows 10.
Method 1 of 2
Restore CD/DVD drive icon using Command Prompt
This is probably the easiest way out there to restore the missing CD/DVD drive icon in Windows 10. You just need to execute a simple command in elevated Command Prompt. Here is how to do that.
Step 1: Open the Command Prompt as an administrator. To do so, right-click on the Start button on the taskbar, click Command Prompt (admin), and then click Yes button when you see the User Account Control prompt to open elevated Command Prompt.
Alternatively, you can type CMD in Start menu search box and then simultaneously press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keys to open Command Prompt as admin.
Step 2: In the Command Prompt, copy, and paste the following command before pressing the Enter key. You can use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste operations.
reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
After pasting the command, please press Enter key to execute the command.
Once the command completed, you will see “The operation completed successfully” message, as shown in the picture below. You may now close the Command Prompt window. The CD/DVD drive icon should now appear in This PC and File Explorer.
Method 2 of 2
Restore missing CD/DVD drive icon using a third-party tool
In this method, we use a small third-party tool called DVD Drive Repair. The DVD Drive Repair utility comes in handy when the CD/DVD drive icon is missing or if the CD/DVD drive is not being detected by Windows 10. Here is how to use it.
Step 1: Visit this page and download DVD Drive Repair software. The software is free. Extract the zip file to get the executable of the software.
NOTE: If the link mentioned above is not working, please visit this page to download the same.
Step 2: Double-click on the downloaded DVD Drive Repair software to run the software. No installation is required as it’s a portable utility.
NOTE: If you’re on 64-bit Windows 10, please be sure to run DVDDrive_x64 instead of DVDRepair. If you are not sure, refer to check our if you’re running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 guide.
Step 3: After launching the tool, click Repair DVD Drive (Icon) button.
Step 4: Finally, restart your Windows 10 PC once to get the missing CD-DVD icon back.
