The Downloads folder is one of the most frequently accessed locations on Windows and macOS computers. All files downloaded with web browsers are saved in the Downloads folder.
While you can use hotkeys on a Mac to quickly launch the Downloads folder and create a custom keyboard shortcut to open the Downloads folder on Windows PCs, many users want to add the Downloads folder to the desktop for quick and easy access.

Add Downloads folder to Windows 10/11 desktop
If you are on a Mac, scroll down the page to see directions.
Step 1: Open This PC or any other location in the File Explorer.
Step 2: In the left pane of File Explorer, right-click on the Downloads entry, click Show more options, click Send to, and then click Desktop (create shortcut) to create a shortcut to the Downloads folder on your Windows 10/11 desktop.
Clicking on the Downloads folder shortcut on the desktop opens the same.
Add Downloads folder to Mac desktop
Step 1: Open the Finder by searching or clicking its dock icon.
Step 2: Once the Finder is open, click the Go menu and then click Home to open your user account folder. Here, you should be able to find the Downloads folder, among others.
Step 3: Perform a right-click on the Downloads folder and then click the Make Alias option to create a shortcut to the Downloads folder in the same location.
Step 4: Finally, drag and drop the Downloads folder shortcut to the desktop area of your Mac and add it to the desktop. Simple as that!
