How To Add Files To Zip Files In Windows 11

Last Updated on April 7, 2025 by admin Leave a Comment

Computer users generally create ZIP files when they want to share a large file with others (to compress the file) or need to share several files through email.

When it comes to creating Zip files, Windows 11 offers multiple ways to create Zip files. In addition to the popular Zip file, the recent versions of Windows 11 also support RAR and 7z files out of the box.

While creating a Zip file is easy, many users are unsure about adding a new one to an already Zipped file/folder. For instance, how would you add a file to the Zip file that you missed selecting while creating the Zip file?

One way to add a file to a Zip file is to extract the Zip file content and then create a new one by including the file you want to add. Although we can use this method, there is a much easier way to add files to an already Zipped file/folder. Here is how.

Add files to a Zip file in Windows 11

Step 1: Drag and drop the file that you wish to add to the Zip file onto the Zip file to include it in the Zip file. If you have multiple files, select them and then drag and drop them to the Zip file.

Tip: While adding a file to a Zip file compresses it and shrinks its size, not all files can be compressed further. For instance, pictures saved in the JPEG format are already highly compressed, and adding them to a Zip file might not reduce their size further.

Does Windows 11 support creating password-protected Zip files?

As of writing this article in March 2025, Windows 11 does not allow you to create a password-protected Zip file. You need third-party tools like the popular 7-Zip, for example, to protect a Zip file with a password.
