UPDATE: This tool doesn’t work in version 1607 and later versions of Windows 10. The only workaround is to set a custom picture as the lock screen background and configure Windows 10 to use the same picture for both lock screen and login screen (go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen).
The login screen has been overhauled in Windows 10. The user picture on the login or logon screen now uses a circular-shaped user profile picture instead of square one. Additionally, the login screen background uses a picture instead of a solid color unlike in the previous Windows version.
As you know, Windows 10’s login screen background looks very similar to the default desktop background. The default login screen background image is pretty cool and is much better than having a solid color. As you likely know, it was impossible to set an image as the login screen background in the previous version of Windows.
While there is an option to set your own picture as lock screen background in Windows 10, there is no setting to change the default login screen background. In other words, Windows 10 doesn’t allow you to change the default login screen background picture with a custom picture.
Although the default background of login screen is nice, many of you might want to replace it with your desired one.
Change login screen background image in Windows 10
As of now, there is no software out there to easily change Windows 10’s login screen background picture but a Windows enthusiast at MDL forums has come up with a free utility to change the default login or logon screen background of Windows 10.
Windows 10 Login Background Changer
Windows 10 Login Background Changer is a free utility designed to change the default background of Windows 10 login, logon, or sign-in screen with a custom image. The tool also allows you to set a solid color of your choice if you prefer to have a solid color instead of a picture.
Changing the login background with Windows 10 Login Background Changer is extremely easy. It’s a matter of a few clicks! But for those who are not sure how to use this handy tool, here is how to use Windows 10 Login Background Changer to change logon screen background image.
Step 1: Visit this page of GitHub and download the latest version of the software. The developer has been releasing new versions on a regular basis. So we aren’t providing a direct link to the software.
Step 2: After downloading Win10BGChanger RAR file, either use WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract the archive to a new folder to get two folders named Command Line and GUI.
Step 3: Open up the GUI folder and double-click on W10 Logon BG Changer.exe file to launch the tool. Click Yes button when you see the UAC prompt to let the tool run with admin rights.
Step 4: Once the tool is running, under Edit background, click on the image icon to browse and select the picture that you want to set as login screen background. Click the Apply Changes button to apply the new image.
Step 5: And if you want to set a solid color for the background, select a color from the drop-down box that appears after OR, and then click Apply Changes button.
The tool shows a live preview of the logon/login screen when you select an image or a solid color.
Have you changed the default login screen background image with a custom one?

Since the Anniversary Update this tool doesn’t work anymore (as Microsoft has changed once again how thinks work). In other words, you still *can* change the *lock* screen background image via the settings either to a single colour, to your ow slide show or to Microsoft’s online Spotlight feature. However, as far as the *sign-in* aka login screen is concerned, Windows doesn’t provide a specific feature to customise it, except defining a full screen colour or use the same image as the lock screen (option which by the way doesn’t work reliably at all).
I believe therefore this page should be updated to reflect that this tool doesn’t work anymore before it further harms one’s Windows installation one way or another.
If in the meanitime you’ve found another tool that modifies the Windows.UI.logon.pri file in folder %windows%\Windows\SystemResources\Windows.UI.Logon\ folder location, let us know :-)
Besides, thanks for the great job on this site !

I shouldn’t have to look at the location where my sister was raped, but whenever I want to login to my account its the background picture with the view and the rucksack in the bottom left corner of the picture, I prefer the animal pictures I always tried to click to say that I liked those when I had the option, but now I don’t have the option to dislike the picture, I’m stuck looking at something I never wanted to see, ever.

WARNING! Background changer causes UNABILITY TO CHANGE THE LOCKSCREEN when bc already made some system changes!!!!! In order to change lock screen launch win10 background changer and press “restore to defaults” button. After than you can reset the background again.
Another issue. After using BC you will be unable to use edges (switch apps/desktops) and open action center with swipes (for tablets!).
