How To Enable Windows Photo Viewer In Windows 10

Last Updated on February 6, 2024 by admin 145 Comments

Those of you who have upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 probably have the Windows Photo Viewer program in Windows 10. But some users are reporting that Windows Photo Viewer has gone missing after clean installing or reinstalling Windows 10.

As you likely know, in Windows 10, Microsoft has set metro, modern, or universal apps as default for most file types from music to pictures. The classic Windows Photo Viewer, although it has not been dropped from Windows 10, it doesn’t appear in Default Programs or Default apps page of the Settings app when you perform a clean install of Windows 10 from ISO, after upgrading from a previous version of Windows.

enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 pic1

The new Photos app in Windows 10 is better than the classic Windows Photo Viewer when it comes to the features department. The Photos app not only allows you to crop, rotate, enhance, and remove red-eye from your pictures but also offers many filters and effects to enhance your photographs.

The only problem with the Photos app is it’s a bit slower when compared to the classic Windows Photo Viewer. The other problem is that it’s not a desktop application, meaning long-time Windows users who prefer using a desktop app might not like it.

As said before, after performing a clean install of Windows 10, the classic Windows Photo Viewer might not be available in the Default Programs or Default Apps section.

If you want to make Windows Photo Viewer default in Windows 10 but can’t find it, here is how to enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 and then make it default.

Tip: If you are on Windows 11, please refer to our how to enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 11 guide.

Bring back the classic Windows Photo Viewer to Windows 10

Step 1: Please create a manual restore point by following the instructions in our how to create a restore point in Windows 10 guide as we are going to edit the registry.

Step 2: Click here to download the PhotoViewer.zip file on to your Windows 10 PC.

Enable classic Photo Viewer in Windows 10 step3

Step 3: Extract the ZIP file, double-click on the PhotoViewer.reg file, and then click the Yes button when you see the following confirmation dialog to merge it. Alternatively, you can right-click on it and then click the Merge option.

Enable classic Photo Viewer in Windows 10 step4

Step 4: Finally, click the OK button again when you get the following dialog box. That’s it! You have just enabled the classic Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10.

Enable classic Photo Viewer in Windows 10 step5

To check if Windows Photo Viewer is enabled and to open a picture with Windows Photo Viewer, right-click on a picture file, click Open with, click Choose another app (if Photo Viewer is not showing here), click More apps (only if you cannot see the Photo Viewer in the list), and then click Windows Photo Viewer to open the selected picture file with Windows Photo Viewer.

To make it default for images, you need to follow the directions given below.

Make Photo Viewer default in Windows 10

Setting the Windows Photo Viewer as the default program for pictures is not as easy as it was a few years ago. Now that the classic Default Programs redirects you to the Settings app and the Settings app doesn’t let you set the Windows Photo Viewer (Windows Photo Viewer doesn’t show up in the list), setting the Windows Photo Viewer as the default picture viewer is a bit tedious. Anyways, here is how to do that.

Step 1: Right-click on a JPEG, BMP, or PNG picture file, click Open with, click Choose another app, click More apps if you cannot see the Photo Viewer in the list, select Windows Photo Viewer, select Always use this app to open this type of files option and then click the OK button to set Windows Photo Viewer as the default for the selected picture file type.

enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 pic2 enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 pic3 enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 pic4

You need to repeat the above steps for all common picture file types such as JPEG, BMP, and PNG if you want to make Windows Photo Viewer default for these file types. To view the file extensions in the File Explorer, navigate to the View menu (in the File Explorer) and then click the File name extensions checkbox.

Have you set Windows Photo Viewer as default in Windows 10 or using the native Photos app?

Did a Win 10 reinstall to find that photo viewer was gone. I’ve spent the last 6 months trying to get it back. Thank goodness I stumbled on your site. It worked great. Windows Viewer is just what I need to just view photos and scan through them. Much better and easier than Photos. If I need to do any editing, Photos is always there, but it’s frustrating to use it just to look at pics. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Ok me too thank you thanks, thank you and thank you again and again, But can somebody address the issue of printing within the photo viewer? I guess not so be happy to just get back the old photo viewer with only viewing function. so thank you thank you if you could come up with something that gives full functionality like templates for printing multi pictures on one page like the old windows 7 photo viewer? if you find a solution to that I give a penny for your thoughts.

    February 17, 2019 at 5:28 pm

Thank you very much for this! Even though you would expect everything in windows 10 to be an upgrade, it is not the case. In fact the windows 10 photos app is very blurry compared to windows photo viewer.

  14. Mojo says

    February 5, 2019 at 5:31 pm

yes it worked as far as viewing only but how do I print either single or multiple photos from there? when pressing print it should comes up with various template just like windows 7 right? wrong. because you will get an internal error occurred message and you wont get the windows 7 like dialogue to give you templates options how many pictures you want to print or even to print a single sheet is not possible. so really not that useful unless someone could come up with a method to fully functionalise the photo viewer in windows 10.

  15. Mojo says

    February 5, 2019 at 3:43 pm

printing is not working. either single photo or multiples. get error message, printing caused an internal error etc. any fix please???

  16. Mojo says

    February 5, 2019 at 3:40 pm

All good but it doesnt give you full functionality such as printing like windows 7 machine which even gives templates to print multiple photos on one a4 paper or even a single image print doesnt work. I am looking for a proper solution to regain full functionality of the photo viewer in particular printing. Any ideas please??

My viewer which I use SEVERAL times daily went missing. On my own I would have messed this up for sure. It’s the little things. I appreciate this!

    Worked!! Thank you!!!

I used Mozilla Firefox. Initially, when I click the download link for the reg file, it didn’t work, instead it shows me a page with codes.
So I clicked ‘save page’ option provided by Firefox,
    save as type ‘All Files’,
    File name: PhotoViewer.reg
    Then ‘save’.

Before I run it, I edit the registry file and it showed the same coding I saw on the page Firefox showed me previously. Thus, I continued with the ‘Step 3’ mentioned in this website and done.

This worked wonderfully! I too have a fresh build and thus needed a clean Win10 install. I hate using Photos so much – it’s too clunky and slow and, being a digital artist, I simply don’t have the time for that :/

And for anyone confused about saving the .reg file, you open the new tab with the code in it and press CTRL+S and save the .reg file to wherever you need it on your PC.

This doesn’t go far enough. I don’t want the OLD MS Photo Viewer either. I want to use IrfanView, which MS has gone out of their way to break in MSWin10. I really don’t give a c**p what MS thinks I should be using; I know what I want to use, and they can darned well obey what I tell them.

Since all this legacy content will eventually be removed, you might as well get used to the new programs instead. And by the way, why use Windows 10 if you will be clinging back to the old? Stay with Windows 7.”

Except, of course, that if you are having to replace an old computer which is no longer working Windows 7 isn’t a choice as it is no longer installed in new computers.

Remember, new isn’t necessary better and personal tastes differ.

Guys, when you click the download link, it gives you a bunch of text. Copy and paste that text into notepad and save it as “[input any name].reg”. From there, you can double-click on your newly made reg file to integrate it into your system.

many thanks for that, quick and effective. The only question is why did MS lose one of the most useful features of previous versions? Incredible. Judging by the number of people reinstalling this, they might just quietly add it back in at some point to save everyone the trouble and frustration.

Weird that we live in a digital age where everyone is using digital photography and the one thing MS seems to keep making worse with every new release is viewing digital pictures full screen. I’ll have to try this fix because “extra large thumbnails” and no editing capability beyond rotating just doesn’t cut it.

I have recently configured Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 after seeing the the Photo Viewer App doesn’t do color management and is required for my photo viewing. Windows Photo Viewer shows color managed images but upon opening full screen will display in the monitor profile. Those of us using wide gamut screens require this functionality. I also like to have my proofing and editing applications as icons or in the start menu. I have not been able to find the application to do so. My hunt continues. I wish MS would understand many of us use the existing tools. If you cheapen them and don’t disclose the change and ramifications it ruins the experience. You know that and we do too. Get with it. And I am 100% Windows, windows phone, etc…

    Thanks a lot, it works!
The native Windows 10 Photo application says “We can’t open this file” if the image is on my ext4 formatted partition (I’m using ext2fsd 0.62 driver). But old Windows Photo Viewer can open the images from ext4, and in Windows 10 as well.
From hfs+ partitions (Paragon driver), both these programs open the images properly.
