Open Skype chat history and shared files

Microsoft offers Skype shared files and chat history in a .tar file. On a Windows PC, the easiest way is to use a third-party tool such as the 7-Zip to extract the .tar file although you can use the Command Prompt to extract it. On Macs, however, you can use the Finder to open .tar files.

Once extracted, you can open the .json file with any supported software, such as this official tool, to view your conversations.

I signed up before Skype became a Microsoft product, therefore, I don’t have a Microsoft account associated with my Skype account. Also, I signed up with an email address that is now defunct. In 2017 I changed this email address in my profile, but when I try to reset my password now, it tries to go to the original account. Am I totally screwed = it’s impossible to download all my history?
