Do you want to change the product key of Office 2019 or Office 2016? Would you like to change Microsoft Office 2019 or Office 2016 product key without re-installing the Office suite? In this guide, we will show how you can change or update the product key.
Most Office users never find the necessity to change the product key. Users who had entered a pirated key or users who had entered the product key of a different edition of Office might need to change or update the current key with a new product key in order to active the Office properly.
If you’re running a version of Office 2016/2019 and want to change its product key for some reason, you can do so easily by following the instructions in one of the two given methods. The first method uses the GUI to change the Office product key, whereas the second method is for users who prefer to change the product key using the Command Prompt.
Follow the given below instructions to change or update Office 2019/2016 product key in Windows.
Change or update Office 2019/2016/2013 license key
METHOD 1 of 2
Step 1: Open Programs and Features. To do so, type Programs and Features in Start menu search box or Start screen, and then press Enter key.
Or
Open Run command box with the help of Windows+R hotkey, type Appwiz.cpl in the box, and then press Enter key.
Step 2: Look for Microsoft Office 2019/2016/2013 entry, right-click on the same, and then click Change option.
Step 3: Here, select Enter a Product key option and click the Continue button.
Step 4: Finally, enter your new 25 character product key in the box and then click the Continue button to change your Office 2013/2016/2019 product key.
Note that this will show you the installation screen. You can simply click Continue or click the Customize button to add/remove an Office application.
Good luck!
METHOD 2 of 2
Change Office 2013/2016 from Command Prompt
Step 1: The first step is to open the elevated Command Prompt. To do so, you can type CMD in the Start screen or Start menu search box and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter key.
Alternatively, you can navigate to Command Prompt entry in the Start menu or Start screen, right-click on Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator option.
Note that running the Command Prompt as administrator is necessary in order to change the product key of Office.
Step 2: In the Command Prompt, please execute the following command:
If you’re running 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, use the following command:
cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS”/inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
If you’re running 32-bit version Office 2013 on 32-bit Windows, please use the following command:
cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS” /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
If you’re running 32-bit version of Office 2013 on 64-bit Windows, please use the following command instead:
cscript “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS” /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
In the above command, replace XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with the new key that you would like to use.
Once the key is successfully updated, you’ll see “Product key installation successful” message. That’s it!

Thank you for the help! I had an *odd* situation where for some reason Microsoft had upgraded my licensed Office 2007 up to Office 2016, through automatic update. I had to replace the motherboard on my Lenovo Thinkpad, and after this, Office 2016 gave me an error for unlicensed software. I was not able to activate on-line or over the phone and could not enter the key that I had for Office 2007. I tried Microsoft Office support, and they were no help. I was prepared to uninstall Office 2016 and just run the Office 2007. But I came across this article on a search, and by running the repair tool for Office 2016, it is now licensed and activated. Thanks so much for this information.

Fernando, you method will not work with Office 2013, so don’t steer people the wrong way. In Office 2013 there is no option to “change license” under “File” – “Account”.
Fernando says
Well, let me tell you that the “right” way to change key is not either of this to. The right way is to go to word (or other office program), clic on “File”, then “Account” and then “change licence”.
Office has its own way to do this, you don’t need to start doing things in the terminal or change the app from the control panel.

Step 2 via CMD prompt worked for me, the version of 2013 that I had didn’t offer product key change when selecting “change” from the add/remove programs. Side note: even though I was running x64 version the vbs file was in the 32-bit folder.

@ Thanks for the input, Robert. I had changed the product key of Office 2010 about two years ago without deleting the old one and managed to use it without any issues for 2 years.
Robert says
You will want to remove old keys while you are at it with the command prompt method. I’ve had weird things happen before when old keys are left floating.
