Thank you for the help! I had an *odd* situation where for some reason Microsoft had upgraded my licensed Office 2007 up to Office 2016, through automatic update. I had to replace the motherboard on my Lenovo Thinkpad, and after this, Office 2016 gave me an error for unlicensed software. I was not able to activate on-line or over the phone and could not enter the key that I had for Office 2007. I tried Microsoft Office support, and they were no help. I was prepared to uninstall Office 2016 and just run the Office 2007. But I came across this article on a search, and by running the repair tool for Office 2016, it is now licensed and activated. Thanks so much for this information.

Fernando, you method will not work with Office 2013, so don’t steer people the wrong way. In Office 2013 there is no option to “change license” under “File” – “Account”.

Well, let me tell you that the “right” way to change key is not either of this to. The right way is to go to word (or other office program), clic on “File”, then “Account” and then “change licence”.

Office has its own way to do this, you don’t need to start doing things in the terminal or change the app from the control panel.

Step 2 via CMD prompt worked for me, the version of 2013 that I had didn’t offer product key change when selecting “change” from the add/remove programs. Side note: even though I was running x64 version the vbs file was in the 32-bit folder.

@ Thanks for the input, Robert. I had changed the product key of Office 2010 about two years ago without deleting the old one and managed to use it without any issues for 2 years.

You will want to remove old keys while you are at it with the command prompt method. I’ve had weird things happen before when old keys are left floating.
