How To Update VLC Media Player To Latest Version

The VLC media player is one of the best video players out there for computer and mobile operating systems. It’s not only available for Windows operating system but Android, macOS, Linux, and iOS as well.

The VLC media player automatically checks for updates unless you have turned off the same during installation. That said, it’s a good idea to make sure that you are running the latest version by manually checking the same.

Check VLC media player version installed on your PC

Step 1: Open the VLC media player.

Step 2: Click the Help menu, and then click the About option to know the VLC version installed on your PC.

To update the VLC media player to the latest version, you can use one of the two methods given below.

Method 1 of 2

Step 1: Launch the VLC media player.

Step 2: Click the Help menu and then click the Check for updates option to let the VLC media player check if there is an update is available. Your PC must be connected to the Internet.

Step 3: If an update is available, it will display the following dialog which shows the version number of the available update. Click the Yes button to download the update.

If there is no update available, you will get “You have the latest version of VLC media player” message.

Step 4: Once downloaded, you will get the following dialog. Click the Install button to begin installing the newest version of VLC media player.

When you get the following screen, make sure that Upgrade VLC using previous settings option is selected if you want to retain your current VLC settings.

Method 2 of 2

Update VLC to the latest version manually

If for any reason, the above method fails to update VLC media player to the latest version, you can use this method.

Step 1: Visit this page of the VLC media player and download the setup file for Windows operating system.

Step 2: Run the setup file. Click the Next button.

Step 3: Select Add/Remove/Reinstall components and then click the Next button.

Step 4: Select/deselect components that you want to keep or remove and then click the Next button to install the latest version.

Click the Finish button.

    I love VLC, use it every day, but I haven’t upgraded in a while because they stopped adding TuneIn automatically and I had to do it manually, in a slightly cumbersome way. Do you know if it will upgrade with my current TuneIn settings in place? It hadn’t done that previously.
