HP is a well-known name in the printer industry. It offers a wide range of printers, from basic inkjet printers to laser printers, including all-in-ones.
If you own an HP printer and use it extensively, you might want to periodically check the ink level or toner cartridge level to buy ink or toner cartridges in advance.
Generally speaking, when the printouts are faded, it’s the best time to replace the ink cartridges. But you might want to make sure that the ink levels are low before buying new ones.
Luckily, like other printer manufacturers, HP also offers software to easily check estimated printer ink levels.
If you are on Windows 10/11, you can easily check the HP printer cartridge ink level using these two tools.
NOTE: On some HP printers, the built-in display on the printer displays ink level. But not all the printers have this functionality.
Method 1 of 2
Use HP Printer Assistant to check ink levels
While installing your HP printer driver, the setup usually installs HP Printer Assistant or a similar HP printer software. The Printer Assistant displays estimated cartridge ink levels. The Printer Assistant also enables you to change printer settings and troubleshoot problems.
If you want to buy a new cartridge from HP, it offers a direct link as well.
Method 2 of 2
Install the HP Smart printer app to check ink levels
If you have connected your HP printer to a Windows 10 PC, you likely have this official HP printer app. If not, you can download and install the HP Smart printer app from the official Windows Store. Note that there are two apps out there: HP Smart and HP DesignJet Print Experience.
Install the HP DesignJet Print Experience app only if you own a DesignJet series printer. The HP Smart app is meant for all-in-one and other printers. If your printer doesn’t belong to the DesignJet series, get the HP Smart app.
Both these apps display estimated cartridge ink levels.

I have an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M283fdw printer that is now 2 months old.
Initially, when an ink cartridge was low, I was notified and was told which cartridge
needed to be replaced. Since there are 5 cartridges, it was helpful to learn which
one needed to be replaced. More recently, I am only notified which one needed
to be replaced. Thus far, I am still trying to find out which cartridge needs to be
replaced. Why is the cartridge that needs is no longer identified? The whole
project is now more difficult.

Never getting another HP product again! This is ridiculous, spending all this time just to find out what my printer’s ink levels are! You suck, HP!!!

I need to know how to see ink levels on my HP Smart Tank 6001 – I have the HP smart but it does not show real ink levels. I can’t seem to get the HP Support Assistant. I can’t believe that you have to download apps that I can’t get to find out ink levels on my computer. I should have kept my Epson.

I am having the same problem in not being able to find out ink levels on my HP printer(Windows 10) – I used to have this, but it has now disappeared.
Reference purchase of cheaper ink cartridges: I buy mine from the Cartridge Pople.com. Excellent service and very speedy delivery.

I am having the same issue with my HP63 cartridges, both black and white and colour. They cost far too much, for how long they last. Where can I order cheaper cartridges? Is there an outlet in Ottawa, Ontario Canada? I have the HP3830 Jet printer, the cheapest printer around. But that once in awhile I need a bit of colour. Thanks for any whereabouts info.

I have been having issues with genuine HP ink cartridges. I get about one printing from the colored and then a message pops up that I need to replace my cartridges. Very disappointed.

And if you use aftermarket cartridges, like I use in my HP 7510 All In One, HP’s software will try to prevent you from getting any use at all from your printer once you use the “check ink” mode/app. I’ve found a way to get around the block on the printer, but it’s an aggravating and time consuming process. Solution: I buy see through cartridges that let me see the ink level.
I’m not going to pay murder for genuine HP cartridges. The aftermarket cartridges with the chip found on Ebay work just fine and have been for the 10 years or so that I’ve been using them..
