A Windows 11 PC user might want to resize an image for various reasons. Maybe the user wants to reduce the dimension of the image before uploading it to a web portal, reduce the file size before sharing the picture via email, or maybe the user just wants to resize the image to a specific pixel size.
Resizing an image on a computer running Windows 11 is very easy as there are multiple pre-installed apps to help you resize images. The built-in Photos and Paint apps can help you resize an image by pixels or percentages.
NOTE: Scaling an image larger than its original dimensions is not recommended using the Photos or Paint app, as doing so can lead to pixelation. If you wish to enlarge a picture’s dimension, you need advanced software such as Adobe Photoshop.
Method 1 of 3
Resize images via the Paint app in Windows 11
The Paint app in Windows 11 not only lets you resize images but also lets you remove background from pictures.
Step 1: Right-click on the image file you want to resize, click Open with, and then click Paint to open the image file with the Paint app.
Step 2: Once the image is open in the Paint app, click the Resize and skew icon or use the Ctrl + W hotkey to open the Resize dialog.
Step 3: Here, select the Percentage or Pixels radio button, depending on your requirements. If you wish to resize the selected image file by, let’s say, 50% of its current resolution, select the Percentage radio button, type 50 in Horizontal and Vertical boxes, and then click the OK button to resize the image immediately.
If you wish to resize the image to specific pixels, select the Pixels radio button and then type your resolution before clicking the OK button.
If you are not happy with the result, use Ctrl + Z hotkey to undo it. To save it, use the Ctrl + S hotkey or click the File menu and then click Save.
Method 2 of 3
Use the inbox Photos app to resize images in Windows 11
Step 1: With default settings, double-clicking on a picture file opens the picture with the Photos app. If the Photos app is not the default picture viewer, right-click on the picture file, click Open with, and then click the Photos app.
Step 2: In the Photos app, click the three dots in the toolbar (refer to the picture below) and then click the Resize image option.
Step 3: Like the Paint app, the Photos app also lets you resize the image by percentage or pixels. Select an option, enter the value, and then click the Save button.
As you can see in the picture above, the dialog shows the current resolution and size of the picture, which allows you to accurately resize the picture file. For JPEG images, it also offers a bar so that you can select the picture quality.
Method 3 of 3
Use the Paint.net app to resize images in Windows 11
We assume you have already installed the Paint.net app on your Windows 11 PC. If not, you can get it from the Microsoft Store (paid) or the official website (free).
Step 1: In the File Explorer, navigate to the folder containing the picture file you want to resize, right-click on it, click Open with, and then click Paint.net to open the picture file with the Paint.net app.
Step 2: In the Paint.net app, click the Image menu and then click the Resize option to open the Resize dialog. Alternatively, you can use Ctrl + R hotkey to open the Resize dialog quickly.
Step 3: Once again, this app also allows you to resize an image by percentage or absolute value. Select how you would like to resize the image, type in the numbers, and then click the OK button. If you are going to resize the image by its absolute value, please be sure to select the Maintain aspect ratio option.
