Are recently downloaded files not appearing in the Downloads folder? Are files downloaded with Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or any other web browser not showing in the Downloads folder? Today, we will explain why downloaded files might not appear in the Downloads folder on your Windows 11 PC.
With default installation settings, files downloaded with web browsers such as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox appear in the Downloads folder. However, if they are not appearing in the Downloads folder, it could be because the default download location has been changed.
Your web browser’s download setting has been changed
All web browsers, with default settings, save downloaded files to Windows 11’s Downloads folder unless you have changed the default download location. Here is how to restore the default setting.
Step 1: Type edge://settings/downloads in the Edge address bar and then hit the Enter key. If using Chrome, type chrome://settings/downloads in its address bar and then press Enter. On Firefox, type about:preferences#general before hitting the Enter key.
Step 2: On Edge and Chrome, click the Change button under the Downloads section, select the Downloads folder, and then click the Select folder button to set it as the default. Meanwhile, the section also shows the location where the downloaded files are currently being saved.
In Firefox, click the Choose button under the Files and Applications section, then select the Downloads folder to set it as the default download location.
If you are using a different web browser, the procedure for changing the default download location is quite similar. A quick web search should help you find the exact steps.
From now onwards, all downloaded files with this web browser should appear in the Downloads folder. If you use multiple web browsers, you need to change the default download location in all of them.
Way to quickly find downloaded files in web browsers on Windows 11
This method works with almost all web browsers out there for Windows.
Step 1: When the web browser is open, simultaneously press the Ctrl and J keys (Ctrl + J) to open the downloads menu that shows all recently downloaded file entries.
Step 2: You may select an entry and then click the folder’s icon to open the file in the location where it’s saved.
Check if the downloaded file is hidden
Although chances are very slim, you might have accidentally hidden the downloaded file that you are looking for. Here is how to unhide all hidden files in the Downloads folder.
Step 1: Open the Downloads folder.
Step 2: Click View, click Show, and then ensure that the “Hidden items” option has a check mark next to it. If not, click on it to see all hidden files in the folder.
The Downloads folder now displays all files, including hidden files.
Check if Windows 11 is configured to automatically delete files from the Downloaded files
Yes, Windows 11 offers an option to automatically delete old files from the Recycle Bin after x days if they have not been opened. For instance, you can configure it to automatically delete file if they have not been opened for 1, 14, 30, or 60 days. To check its status:
Step 1: Open Windows 11 Settings. Go to System > Storage > Storage Sense.
Step 2: Ensure that “Never (default)” is selected from the drop-down menu next to the “Delete files in my Downloads folder if they have not been opened for more than” option.
