How To Create Keyboard Shortcut To Open This PC in Windows 11

Last Updated on September 12, 2024 by admin Leave a Comment

With default installation settings, the Windows logo + E hotkey opens the File Explorer to Home in Windows 11.

Users who need to access This PC must open File Explorer Home and click the This PC entry in the left pane.

While we can change the File Explorer settings to always open the File Explorer to This PC instead of Home (which will make Windows + E open This PC), many users prefer the File Explorer to open to Home instead of This PC, as the Home folder shows your favorite files, recently accessed files and frequently accessed folders.

Because of this behavior, there is no dedicated keyboard shortcut to open This PC (unless you configure File Explorer to open This PC).

If you need to access both Home and This PC very often, you might want to create a dedicated keyboard shortcut to open This PC as well. By doing so, you will be able to use the default Windows logo + E to open Home/Quick Access and the new hotkey to open This PC.

Here is how to create a keyboard shortcut to open This PC in Windows 11.

Create a keyboard shortcut to open This PC on Windows 11 PC

Step 1: Open File Explorer via search or the Windows logo + E hotkey.

Step 2: The File Explorer left pane shows This PC with other entries. Drag and drop This PC from the File Explorer left pane to the desktop area to create a This PC shortcut on the desktop.

NOTE: If This PC is missing from File Explorer, you can refer to the directions in our how to add This PC to File Explorer in Windows 11 guide.

Step 3: Now, right-click the This PC shortcut icon on the desktop and click Properties.

Step 4: Under the Shortcut tab, you should see the Shortcut key field.

Select the Shortcut key field and then press the keys that you would like to assign to open This PC.

For instance, if you wish to set Ctrl + Alt + E as the hotkey to open This PC, you need to simultaneously press these keys.

Note that you cannot set the Windows logo key. Only the Ctrl, Shift, and Alt keys can be used.

Once done, click the Apply button to set the keyboard shortcut.

From now on, you can press the newly created keyboard shortcut to open This PC in File Explorer. Note that Windows 11 might take about two seconds to open This PC and will not open This PC immediately upon pressing the hotkey.

Important: Please note that the keyboard shortcut will work as long as the This PC shortcut on the desktop is not deleted. So, please do not delete the This PC shortcut icon on the desktop.
