Windows 11, like earlier versions of Windows, offers multiple options to customize the operating system. Like other areas, users can change the color of the taskbar as well.
In one of our earlier articles titled how to change the color of the taskbar in Windows 11 we have detailed the instructions to change the taskbar color. However, many users have complained that they are unable to change the taskbar color as the option “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” has been disabled.
If the “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” is grayed out or disabled on your Windows 11 computer, worry not.
Why “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” is disabled?
Windows 11 disables or grays out the “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” option when the selected mode is Light and not Dark. So, as a workaround, we can set the default Windows mode to Dark instead of Light. Remember that setting the Windows mode to light will not enable the dark mode for apps and other areas of Windows 11. Only the taskbar and Start menu will turn dark, but you can change their color to a color of your choice.
Enable “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” in Windows 11
Step 1: Go to Windows 11 Settings > Personalization > Colors page.
Step 2: From the drop-down next to Choose your mode, select Custom.
Step 3: Now, select Dark from the drop-down next to Choose your default Windows mode. If you wish to enable the dark mode/theme everywhere, select Dark from the drop-down next to Choose your default app mode option as well.
Step 4: Finally, turn on the Show accent color on Start and taskbar option (scroll down the page to see the option). If you cannot see the option, please click on Accent color.
Step 5: You may now change the taskbar and Start menu color by clicking Accent color, selecting Manual from Accent color drop-down, and clicking on a color of your choice.
