The Notepad in Windows 11 has been receiving new features. Over the past two years, it has received several new features, including tabs, dark mode, spell check, and auto-save.
In the latest version of Windows 11, with default settings, the Notepad app opens previously open notes or pages. This means that you can quickly start editing previously open notes without having to open them all over again. This feature is very similar to how web browsers offer you an option to open previous sessions instead of the new tab when you open them.
While most users like the feature, there are users who would like the Notepad to open a blank page/note every time it opens instead of opening previously open notes.
Luckily, the team behind Notepad knows that not all users like to see previously open notes when they launch Notepad. Hence, the Notepad offers an option to open a new note instead of previous notes when you launch it.
This guide shows you how to configure the Notepad app in Windows 11 to open a blank note by default instead of previous notes.
Method 1 of 2
Open new note by default in Notepad in Windows 11
Step 1: Launch the Notepad app.
Step 2: Click the cogwheel or settings icon in the Notepad toolbar to open its settings.
Step 3: Here, click When Notepad starts to see available options. By default, Open content from the previous session is selected. If you wish to see a blank note every time you open the Notepad, select the Open a new window radio button. That’s it!
From now on, Notepad will open a new blank note instead of the previous session every time you launch it.
Method 2 of 2
Restore old Notepad
If you are not happy with the features offered in the new Notepad for Windows 11 and prefer the old Windows 10-style Notepad, you can consider restoring the old Notepad in Windows 11. Please refer to our how to install the old Notepad in Windows 11 guide for detailed directions.
