Rename a Word document while it’s open
This method works both in Windows and macOS.
Step 1: When the Word document is open in the Word program, click on the Word document’s name that appears in the title bar to see the Rename option.
Alternatively, you can also click the down arrow that shows up next to the document name to see an option to rename the file.
Step 2: Type a new name or correct the spelling mistake and then press the Enter key to rename the Word document immediately.

Another way to rename a Word document while it’s open
This method works in macOS only.
Step 1: While the document is open in the Word app, click the File menu and then click the Rename option.
Step 2: Clicking the Rename option will automatically select the file name appearing in the title bar of the Word app. Type a new name for the Word document and then press the Enter key to save the new name. That’s all!
