Two out of three computer users use Google Chrome web browser to access the web. With about 70% market share, Chrome by Google is easily the most used internet browser on computers.
As you likely know, the team behind Chrome pushes out updates frequently to fix bugs and vulnerabilities and add new features. These regular updates keep your Chrome browser and the computer where Chrome is installed safely.
By default, Chrome automatically checks for updates in the background and installs them when available. In short, you do not need to manually check for Chrome updates or try to update the Chrome browser unless automatic updates are turned off.
In addition to automatic updates, users can also manually update Chrome. This guide shows you how to manually update Chrome to the latest version on Windows 10/11 PC and Mac. The best part is that updating Chrome manually is easy and takes only a few seconds if your computer is connected to a good internet connection.
NOTE: If Chrome updates are disabled by a system administrator, you cannot use this method to update the Chrome browser manually.
Update Chrome to the latest version in Windows and macOS
Step 1: Run the Chrome browser.
Step 2: Click the menu icon in the toolbar (refer to the picture below), click Help, and then click About to open the About Chrome page.
Step 3: When you open the About Chrome page, it automatically checks for updates. If available, updates are automatically downloaded and installed. Once installed, it might prompt you to restart the Chrome browser to complete installing the updates. That’s it!
If you are running the latest version already, a “Chrome is up to date” message will appear.
The About Chrome page shows the version number, which you can use to ensure that you are running the latest version of Chrome.
NOTE: If you get the “Updates are disabled by an administrator” error message, it’s likely because your system administrator has turned off Chrome updates. Please contact your system admin to update Chrome.
