Microsoft has launched the Outlook.com email service and is now available for everyone. The new webmail service from Microsoft comes with the new user interface, robust account security, industry leading spam protection, minimal advertisements, Office Web apps, ability to connect to Facebook and Twitter, and more.
While it’s possible to get an @Outlook.com email address, Microsoft has made it easy for existing MSN, Hotmail, and Live account users to experience the new webmail service.
Existing Hotmail, MSN, and Live users can upgrade to Outlook.com by keeping the email address, password, contacts, and old emails. To upgrade to Outlook.com, sign-in to your Hotmail, simply click Upgrade option present in the Options menu to explore the new email service. When you rename your existing email address to @Outlook.com address, your new email address just like the old one and you won’t lose anything.
Besides, it’s also possible to rename your existing Hotmail, Live, and MSN email address to @Outlook.com. For instance, if your current email address is [email protected], you can rename it to [email protected] provided that the name is available. When you log in to your new inbox, you can choose to keep your old emails in a separate folder or in your inbox as well. Whenever you receive mail to your old address, you will see it in your inbox or the newly created folder. Account information such as contacts, photos, and documents will switch to your new address within a few days.
So, follow the given below procedure to rename your existing Hotmail & Live account to Outlook.com.
Rename Hotmail, Live & MSN to Outlook.com account
Step 1: Open Outlook.com in your web browser and sign-in with your current email address.
Step 2: Next, click on the Gears icon on the upper-right, and then click More mail settings to open Outlook options.
Step 3: Here, on the left-hand side, click Rename your email address option. You will be asked to enter your account password again to continue.

If I switch from @live.com to @outlook.com, will all old, present and future contacts/recipients/senders see or get an alert that my address has changed? I hope so. If not, it looks like you’re saying that anyone who sends me something to my old address will still have it automatically delivered to my new address? Is that correct?– Thank you ([email protected])…that’s as long as the name hasn’t bern taken, right? And, if it has, can I switch it back to the live.com?

S0me how I got on outlook from Hotmail unknowingly. I want to go back to my Hotmail.
I am not receiving my emails and getting 25 + junk mail each day where I wasn’t getting that many junk mail a week with my hot mail.
Some of the requested sites are sending me help, but I’m NOT GETTING THEM.
I HATE BEING FORCED INTO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WHEN THE OLD WAS WORKING JUST FINE AND FLAWLESS.

Yes, you can retain everything including Contacts. Whenever you receive mails to your old address you see them in your new inbox.

Strange, it’s worked fine for me. Wait for a day and try again.
Mike says

Just a question : When I change my hotmail (let’s say it is [email protected]) to [email protected] ; Will I be able to use the outlook.com adress and get on MSN and retain everything that is on my MSN ? (I mean chat contacts and chat history)
