3 Ways To Check Disk Space Usage By Programs\Apps In Windows 10

There may be times when you want to free up the disk space on your Windows 10 computer. While trying to free up the disk space, you might want to uninstall programs and apps that you don’t use anymore.

Before uninstalling an app installed from the Store or a classic desktop program, you might want to know how much disk space the app/program is using on your computer.

There are three ways to check the disk space used by applications in Windows 10.

Method 1 of 3

Check app/program disk space usage via Settings

Step 1: Open the Settings app. Navigate to Apps > Apps & features page.

Step 2: The page displays all apps installed from the Store as well as the classic desktop programs installed from outside the Store. Disk space usage will appear next to app’s entry.

However, as you can see in the picture above, the page doesn’t display disk space being used by all desktop programs. While it shows the disk space usage for most desktop programs, the information is not available for all programs. For instance, the page doesn’t display the disk space used by Google Chrome.

If the page is not displaying the disk space usage for a program that you are looking for, follow the directions in Method 2 of this guide.

Method 2 of 3

Check the disk space usage by programs in Windows 10

Step 1: Open the Programs and Features window by typing appwiz.cpl in the taskbar search field and then hitting the Enter key.

Step 2: The window displays all installed classic desktop programs, installed date, and disk space being used by them. If the Size column (which displays the disk usage) is missing, right-click on the header of a column (Publisher, for instance) and then check the Size option.

Please note that the list doesn’t include apps installed from the Store as well the pre-installed apps.

Method 3 of 3

Check the disk usage using File Explorer in Windows 10

In addition to the methods mentioned above, you can also use the File Explorer to check the disk space usage by classic desktop programs. Here is how to do that.

Step 1: Open This PC. Open up the drive where Windows 10 is installed (usually its C drive).

Step 2: Here, you will find Program Files as well as Program Files (x86) folders. Note that Program Files (x86) folder is present only in the x64 type of Windows 10.

NOTE: On x64 Windows 10, the Program Files (x86) folder contains 32-bit applications. On x86 Windows 10, x64 programs are not supported, and hence only the Program Files folder is present.

Step 3: Check both Program Files and Programs Files (x86) folders to find your program’s folder. Right-click on the program’s folder and then click Properties.

Step 4: Under the General tab, you can check the disk space used by that program.

In addition to these methods, you can also use third-party uninstallers such as the CCleaner to check the disk space usage by desktop programs.
