Disk Management utility that ships with Windows is primarily used to create and format hard disk partitions. In addition to that, you can use the Disk Management to shrink and extend partition size, change the drive letter of partitions, assign drive letter to partitions, and create, attach, & detach VHDs (virtual hard disks).
Just like in previous versions of Windows operating system, accessing Disk Management in Windows 10/8.1 is fairly simple. You can launch the Disk Management either from Start screen or from the desktop environment.
Follow one of methods given below to open Disk Management in Windows 10 and Windows 8.1:
This is the easiest way of launching Disk Management from desktop environment.
Step 1: When you in the desktop, right-click (or press Windows logo + X keys) on the Start button to reveal the power user menu (Win+X menu), and then click Disk Management option to open the same.
Use this method if you would like to open Disk Management right from Desktop Environment.
Step 1: Open Run dialog box by simultaneously pressing Windows logo key and R key.
Step 2: Type Diskmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, and then hit Enter key to open Disk Management.
Opening Disk Management from Start screen (only for Windows 8.1)
Step 1: Switch to the Start screen and start typing Create and format hard disk partitions.
Step 2: Change the search filter to Settings by clicking on the filter (see picture) and then hit Enter key to open Disk Management.
Tip: You can quickly change the search filter to Settings by using Windows + Q hotkey.
Opening Disk Management from Control Panel.
Step 1: First open Control Panel. There are a couple of ways to open Control Panel in Windows 8/8.1. The easiest way is open Run dialog box (use Windows logo + R hotkey), type Control in the box, and then press Enter key.
Step 2: Once Control Panel window is opened, click System and Security.
Step 3: Next, under Administrative Tools, click the entry titled Create and format hard disk partitions to open Disk Management. That’s it!
Use this method if you prefer to use mouse to open Disk Management.
Step 1: Open This PC or any folder.
Step 2: Right-click on This PC icon in the left-navigation pane, and then click Manage button to open Computer Management window.
Step 3: In the left pane of Computer Management, expand Storage and then click Disk Management to open Windows Disk Management window.
