How To Change Power Button Settings In Windows 10

With default settings, the power button on your Windows 10 device is configured to put the device into sleep mode. The same power button can also be used to force shut down the laptop when it’s not responding by pressing and holding the power button until the laptop is turned off.

But if you are happy with the default action of the power button, you can use this guide to make the most out the power button on your Windows 10 device.

The power button on your Windows 10 device can be configured to shut down, sleep, hibernate or do nothing. If you want, you can also configure the power button to turn off the laptop screen, a very useful option for laptop users.

Change power button actions in Windows 10

Here is how to change power button settings in Windows 10.

Step 1: Open the Power Options window. To open it, right-click on the battery icon on the taskbar and then click Power Options. Alternatively, open the Control Panel, change the View by to Small icons, and then click Power Options to open the same.

Step 2: In the left-pane of the Power Options window, click Choose what the power buttons do link to open System Settings link.

Step 3: In the Power and sleep buttons and lid settings section, you can choose what happens when you press the power button. In the drop-down boxes next to When I press the power button, select either Shut down, Hibernate, Sleep, Turn off the display or Do nothing option.

If you are on a laptop, we recommend you to you to set the power button to turn off the display as turning off the display on a laptop is not very straight-forward in Windows.

By setting the power button to turn off the screen, you can turn off the display by pressing the power button for two or three seconds. Likewise, when you are configuring the power button action, you can also configure what happens when you close the laptop lid (screen).

Click Save changes button.

    I am age 79 not great w/computers HELP ME? I want my desktop to stay on from 1pm to 2am 24/7. I can only find sleep modes??? I have followed all instructions to no avail for 3 hours. I need the simplest and easiest way to achieve this. Thank you
