I have come across a few Aero related issues in Windows 7 recently . Well, as Windows 7 is still in release candidate (RC) stage, users might find a bug or two along with some errors.
But here is a cool and simple way to know what’s wrong with Windows Aero feature (Aero includes effects such as transparency and display effects). There is a Aero troubleshooter in Windows 7 that helps you fix Aero related problems with a few clicks.
To use Aero troubleshooter follow the steps given below:
Step 1. Type troubleshooting in Windows 7 Start menu search field and hit enter, or navigate to Start > Control Panel > All Control Panel items (that is set Control Panel view to small icons or large icons) > Troubleshooting.
Step 2. Under Troubleshoot computer problems click on the option named Display Aero desktop effects. This will launch Aero troubleshooting tool.
Step 3. Click Next to begin the troubleshooting operation.
Step 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to fix the error.
As you can see in the above screenshot, the Aero troubleshooter reports that Desktop Window Manager is disabled and also indicates that Desktop Window Manager is disabled. Using the report, you can simply fix it.
Step 5. You can also see the detailed troubleshooting report by clicking on View detailed information and print it for further use. That’s all.

Oh the joy, I have had this problem for some time now and tried absolutely everything that was suggested online to no avail. I eventually went through the manual for my laptop (Toshiba Satelitte, Windows 7) and eventually came across System Recovery Options. Now I don’t know if this will work for everyone but I was instructed to turn off the laptop and then restart whilst pressing F8. This will take you into Advanced Boot Options under which you will see Repair Your Computer. Press enter and follow the on screen instructions. It does take a while to repair but it’s worth it as when I logged back on to my laptop, all had been restored and my Windows Desktop Manager/Aero are working fine again. I was so overjoyed at finally fixing this problem I thought I would come on here and share and hope that anyone else who has been experiencing this problem and not being able to fix it gets the same results as me.
And the other advantage is that you do not lose any of your files or programs.
Good luck!

Great advice. Spent an hour pulling hair out on release version due to installing old vid card. Even after latest drivers etc were all installed, still couldn’t get Aero to run until I followed your suggestion. Thanks :)

Thank you so much. I never knew such a well developed solution was built in windows 7. Makes life a hell of a lot better to deal with. Fixed everything just like it said, a click of a button. How fun! :)
