Were you using Internet Explorer as your primary web browser on Windows 10 and want to start using Microsoft Edge as your primary web browser now? Do you want to transfer passwords, bookmarks, browsing history and other data from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge in Windows 10?

Before this, as you likely know, it was not possible to import passwords from other web browsers to Edge although we could import bookmarks/favorites from other web browsers to Edge.

Starting with Windows 10 Creators Update (build 15007 or later), there is a new functionality in Edge which allows you import passwords from Internet Explorer to Edge. The feature is very handy for users who want to start using Edge as their primary web browser after using Internet Explorer for a while.

The best thing about this feature is that you can import all passwords saved in Internet Explorer to Edge with the click of a button.

The new import option, imports bookmarks and browsing history, in addition to passwords. This means that, you cannot import only passwords from Internet Explorer to Edge as it doesn’t offer an option to select what to import. However, if you want to import only bookmarks from IE to Edge, you can use bookmarks import functionality.

So, here is how to import passwords, bookmarks, and browsing history from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge in Windows 10.

Import Internet Explorer passwords to Edge

Important: This method applies to 15007 or later builds of Windows 10 only. You can check your Windows 10 install’s build number by typing Winver.exe in Start/taskbar search field and then pressing Enter key.

Step 1: Run Microsoft Edge browser. If Edge refuses to open, you can consider resetting Edge browser.

Step 2: Click the Hub icon (refer to the picture below), and then click Settings.

Step 3: Under Import favorites and other info section, click Import from another browser button. And if you are not getting Import from another browser button, it’s likely because you are not running Windows 10 Creators Update (15007 or later).

Step 4: Under Import your info, select Internet Explorer. Finally, click Import button to begin importing favorites, browsing history and passwords from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge.

Once the import job is successfully done, you will see “All done” message.

This would be great if I had a machine running IE, but my Win 7 machine’s motherboard died and all I have is the hard drive from that machine connected to my new Win 10 machine via a SATA to USB converter. How can I get the IE11 passwords from that drive into Edge?
