Microsoft recently rolled out an update to Internet Explorer 11 to add Bing search bar to the new tab page. If you have installed updates recently or have configured Windows to automatically install new updates, you likely have the new Bing search bar in the new tab page of Internet Explorer 11.
Bing search bar in Internet Explorer 11
Although the new Bing search bar is currently appearing only in Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 systems, Windows 7 users running IE11 will soon have the Bing bar on the new tab page.
As the name suggests, the Bing search bar lets you search the internet using Bing right from the new tab page. While it’s possible to search the web right from the address bar of Internet Explorer, many users who prefer Bing will love this search bar for sure.
Since it’s a Bing search bar, one can’t configure Internet Explorer 11 to use Google to search the web using Bing search bar. The search bar doesn’t appear if you have set Google as the default search engine in IE.
Even though the Bing search bar is a good feature, some of you might want to disable or hide the search bar from the new tab page of Internet Explorer.
Here is how to hide or remove Bing search bar from the new tab page of Internet Explorer 11.
There are two ways to remove Bing search bar. The first method is to set Google as the default search engine in Internet Explorer. The other method is to disable the search functionality in the address bar and search box in the new tab page.
Since we already have covered how to set Google as the default search engine in Internet Explorer 11, we aren’t going to talk about that again here.
Removing Bing search box
Follow the given below instructions to remove Bing search from the new tab page.
IMP: Once the search bar is removed using this method, you won’t be able to search the web from the address bar.
Step 1: Open Internet Explorer 11.
Step 2: Click on the Tools icon located just below the Close button and then click Manage add-ons to open Manage add-ons dialog.
Step 3: Here, under Add-on Types, click Search Providers.
Step 4: Now, under Select the search provider you want to view or change, uncheck the option titled Search in the address bar and the search box on the new tab page and then click Close button to remove the Bing search box. That’s it!
To restore the search box, please check the same option again by following the instructions in above steps.

I’ve been attempting to remove the Bing search bar from IE forever, with no luck. I’ve tried the Control Panel to uninstall, but Bing doesn’t show up in the list. I’ve gone to Tools and manage all add-ons and it doesn’t appear there either. I’ve also gone to Tools & Internet Options and added Google as my preferred search engine.
The only way to temporarily get rid of it is to click “Google” in the upper left hand corner of IE. But whenever I open another tab, here comes Bing again. Does anyone know how to get rid of annoying search engine?

not what I wanted –
I want to remove Bing completely from my PC
although I use a different search engine (DuckDuckGo), it is still appears to be riding on Bing’s shirttails which shows up as a search provider.
I am told that Bing was downloaded and installed as a KB update –anyone know the number ?
or is there A Microsoft uninstall program for this invasive software ?

This is the first time I write a comment to suggest something. This Bing Serch was so annoying that I even removed it from the list of Internet search providers, but ofcourse added Google first , but anyway, when I opened NEW TAB, Bing reappeared. I spent about an hour searching for how to get Google on the NEW tab, and finally I found Joey’s suggestion (February 12, 2018 at 9:17 AM) to do the following: go to the Internet settings, then click the tabs. Then go to “When you open a new tab, then it drops out of the list.” You should check “your first homepage”. Then apply, well then restart. And TaDa! It really worked for me too! Thanks, Joey. I really appreciate your help.

In The bottom left search bar on win 10, Type, control panel then go to… Network and internet/internet options/Tabs/Under, ”When a new tab is opened”/Set it to ”Your first home page”. then it will open to whatever your home page is on the 2nd tab. That simple.

This is all useless. Sure you can get google search in the address bar, but the search bar IS STILL BING! For windows 10 Internet Explorer. I want to be able to have google search in the SEARCH BAR! but changing the default search engine to Google DOES NOT CHANGE THIS! I want to be able to use the search bar with google, not JUST the address bar…
Joey says
They way I did it was this: internet options, Then click on Tabs. Then go down to When I open a new tab, then it drops down a list. You have to check the ” your first home page”. Then apply, ok then restart. It worked for me.

“How To Remove Bing Search From New Tab Page In IE11”
I don’t know exactly what this is supposed to mean, but what I do know is that these instructions do not address my problem. Nor can I find a remedy anywhere at all.
The problem is completely obvious. Why is there nothing online that deals with it?
The problem is that when I open IE11, there is a Bing search bar beneath the menu bar. I cannot change this to Google and I cannot get rid of it.
I DO NOT WANT BING. I have therefore removed it using the Tools menu and changed the default search engine to Google. This does not affect the problem search bar. The search engine used in searching from the address bar is now Google, but the Bing search bar remains, cannot be changed, and will not go away.
Can anyone help with this?

Ernie, THANKS I was still getting Bing on new tabs. Drove me crazy!!! your suggestion worked

Thank you for those suggestions. Why does Microsoft presume that I want MSN when I have my start page set to Google, and also set for default search.
Bing and MSN are TRASH, do not put that in an update and slip it in, this is my computer, not yours.
Mike says
Got rid of this annoying feature of MS… thanks to your direction. There are several ways, but when you click “Manage Add-ons” under Tools > click “Search Providers” on the left side of the box, you will see a list of names in numeric order (i.e. 1.Bing, 2. Secure Search, etc.) on the right side of the box.
On the left bottom, you will see a “Disable suggestions” in blue color, you would need to click on that to DISABLE your BING! search app(s). (I had two BINGS)
Also, on the Right bottom, you will see a “Listing order: Move up | Move down | Alphabetic sort”.
First, click on BING to select/high-light.
Then, click on “MOVE DOWN” repeatedly to move Bing from first to last.(you will see)
Lastly, you can either “Set as default” or just click “Close”
Ta-da… you now are free of that lousy Bing! on your new page.

Many thanks for this fix. Why does Microsoft assume I want to change my new tab? Wish they would keep their noses out!
Ernie says
I had the above disabled and Bing would still come up with new tab… you also need to go: open IE, click on “Tools” at top of page. Click on “Internet Options” at bottom of menu. Make sure you type the address of your desired search engine in the box at the top and select “Apply” at the bottom but not “OK” yet… Click on “Tabs” and then look for “When a new tab is opened, open:” click on down arrow and select “Your first home page” and then “OK”. In Internet options click “Apply” again and “OK”. This worked for me, should work for you. Cheers.

Microsoft released update KB3004247 for IE11, that added a Bing search bar to the New tab page. The New tab page, is the page you see, when you open a new tab, and includes your frequently visited websites. The idea behind releasing this update was to increases prominence of web suggestions, so that users of IE on Windows 8, can easily select web search suggestion.
If you are seeing this Bing Search bar, it means that you have set Bing search as your default search engine. If you have set Google search or any other search as your default search engine, YOU WILL NOT SEE IT.

@ Bob
The search box, as you mentioned, appears only if the Bing is the default search engine. There is no way to add the search box with Google search.
Bob says
Yes it is easy to remove Bing and make Google the default search engine
However when I open a new tab I no longer get a search box. Does anyone know how to reinstall the google search box. This is certainly not a change Microsoft should have made without advising about it and identifying the “downgrade” failing that does anyone know what I have to remove to get it back as it was.
Failing that as I am only a few minutes from the UK Microsoft office i will take it down there next week for them to fix.
