Ever since the first preview release of Windows 10, I had been using the new Microsoft Edge as my primary web browser. Earlier this week, while writing the guide to enable Google search in Windows 10 taskbar search, I had to install Google Chrome desktop browser and set it as default.
While downloading Chrome browser web installer from the official page, I had check the option labelled Set Chrome as my default browser assuming that the Chrome will be set as default browser after the installation. But after installing Chrome I discovered that Chrome was not the default browser.
Clicking Make Google Chrome the default browser button under Chrome settings showed me the following screen with “To change your default apps, go to Settings > System > Default apps.” message instead of setting Chrome as default. It looks like in the current build of Windows 10, we need to manually change default browser settings under Settings app or Default Programs in order to change the default web browser.
In Windows 10, Microsoft Edge is the default browser and is really impressive. But if you prefer Google Chrome and would like to set it as default browser, as said before, the procedure has changed. The current version of Chrome, at least, does nothing but displays above message when you click Make Google Chrome the default browser button.
Chrome as default browser in Windows 10
Complete the given below directions to set Google Chrome as default browser in Windows 10.
Method 1 of 2
Step 1: Open Settings app. To do so, open Start menu and then click Settings icon. Alternatively, you can use Windows + I keyboard shortcut to quickly open Settings app.
Step 2: Click the first option titled System (display, notifications, apps, power). If you are on Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) or above version, please click Apps instead of System.
Step 3: Click Default apps.
Step 4: Now, on the right-side, scroll down the page to see Web browser section.
Step 5: Click on the Edge browser entry (or any browser other than Chrome) to reveal Choose an app, and then click Google Chrome to set it as default browser. That’s it!
Method 2 of 2
Make Chrome the default using Default Programs
Step 1: Open Default Programs by typing Default Programs in taskbar search box and then pressing Enter key.
Step 2: Once Default Programs is launched, click the first link titled Set your default programs.
Step 3: On the left-side, scroll down to see Google Chrome entry, click on it, and then click Set this program as default option available on the right-side to set Chrome as your default browser in Windows 10.
Hope this helps!
