How To Uninstall & Remove Edge Browser From Windows 10

Last Updated on October 7, 2020 by admin 34 Comments

IMPORTANT: This method applies only to the legacy version of the Edge browser and not to the new Chromium-based Edge browser. Chromium-based Edge can be uninstalled like any other program.

Internet Explorer is no longer the default web browser in Windows 10, it’s part of Windows 10 though. The newly introduced Microsoft Edge is the default browser is the newest version of Windows operating system and is fairly impressive.

Microsoft Edge is zipper than Internet Explorer, sports a clean interface, allows you write on webpages, optimized for touch users, offers a dark theme to make the night browsing less painful, it can import bookmarks from other browsers, and has plenty of other small but useful features to improve your web browsing experience.

The new Edge browser although miles ahead of Internet Explorer in every department, the Edge browser is not complete yet. For instance, it has very few plugins. More importantly, the browser is clearly failed to impress long time Chrome and Firefox users.

If you’re a Chrome, Firefox, or Opera user and want to get rid of the Edge browser from Windows 10, you probably have tried uninstalling Edge from Windows 10. Unlike other apps, Edge app can’t be removed via the Settings app. The PowerShell method to uninstall default apps also doesn’t help you uninstall the Edge, as the browser is part of Windows 10.

While you won’t gain anything by uninstalling the Edge browser, users who are hell bent on getting rid of this default browser can now uninstall Edge from Windows 10.

A script to uninstall and remove Edge

MSFN user Legolash20 has created and released a script to uninstall and remove Edge browser from Windows 10. Our friends at WinAero has further tweaked the script to make it better and easier to use. The script allows you remove Edge in a few seconds.

WARNING: And before you jump to the download page, please remember that Edge is part of Windows 10 and uninstalling it might affect the performance and stability of your Windows 10 PC. We recommend you manually create a system restore point before using the script to uninstall Edge.

Note that this script is for the original Microsoft Edge that shipped with Windows 10 and not for the new Chromium-based Edge browser.

Using the script to uninstall and remove Edge from Windows 10

Step 1: Click here to download (scroll down the page to see the download link) the Uninstall Edge ZIP file.

Step 2: Extract the zip file contents to get two file named Uninstall Edge.cmd and Install_wim_tweak. Right-click on Uninstall Edge and then click Run as administrator option. Click Yes if you see the User Account Control prompt.

This is an updated method and is verified to work even on windows 11:

    1. Find your chromium installation of Edge by going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\\Installer

    2. Copy file path.

    3. Open CMD as admin, type cd, and paste the file path then press enter.

    4. Paste this command and press enter: setup.exe –uninstall –system-level –verbose-logging –force-uninstall

    5. Now run the script Uninstall Edge.cmd as administrator after a minute.

    6. Verify there is no edge in the start menu anymore.

I am NOT HAPPY to run my CCleaner program and HAVE TO FORCE SHUTDOWN THE NEW Chromium based EDGE browser that I DID NOT ASK FOR, but was installed AUTOMATICALLY with one of WINDOWS 10 UPDATES, and NOW you tell me that if I REMOVE it it may cause WINDOWS 10 to become UNSTABLE???? NOT PLAYING VERY NICE, MICROSOFT!!!!!

I recently used this tool and it works. Unfortunately it causes errors and prevents Windows updates from being installed. More specifically there are problems with 2019-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB4522355) – Error 0x800f081f.

Is there any way to reverse the procedure? I haven’t found any articles that provide instructions that work. Apparently this script prevents re-installation for good. Any help appreciated!

If you missed this step, you have no simple way to get edge back. You can reset your windows installation, reinstall altogether, or just give up and install Brave. :)

    Good Luck, Have Fun!

    Dear Microsoft,
Thank you, Bill Gates, for MS. It has been a great help worldwide.

Then, MS pushes Windows 10, which is supposedly “free.” Then you violate your promise. I have spent hours trying to configure my fancy solid state 2 terabyte Dell for a writer. I have older copies of books-in-progress that are in earlier versions of MS WORD. You have popups that say that I can’t run these on Windows 10. But with difficulty, I have been able to do that. These books represent thousands of man-hours.

I want a simple machine that is free of bugs, dependable, easy to operate, so I can do my work.

I began with a 40MB 186 and dot matrix printer. Later came Word Perfect, then MS Word, MS Works, Windows XP and Windows 7–they worked well.

Then, someone sells Bill Gates on the idea that the world is overpopulated, which is not true. Then the man who is a software genius believes that the solution is killing babies. I am not mad at Bill Gates, just the opposite. I am happy for him that he is a billionaire and may become a trillionaire. My heart goes out to him and the 60 million babies aborted in the US since 1973–possibly more people than were killed in WWII. Also, the 1.3 billion babies killed worldwide since 1980. Hopefully, he will understand and begin helping people in his quest for self-actualization.

But is there a way to reinstall Edge after running this script? Some malware that’s blocking any change to start page and search settings and enabling the Home button has got into Edge and so far Malware Bytes and Super Antispyware and deleting the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder have all failed to get rid of it.

Microsoft provides a new browser, with new ways for people who need all their fingers broken to cause havoc.

is it possible to also remove Microsoft Edge from Windows Search? because I can still search it there and its clickable too :D

Microsoft was taken to court by the EU for forcing IE down users’ throats. Now they have done the same with Edge. It is intrusive (is keeps resetting itself as my default browser and PDF reader – what the heck were they thinking there?)

Worst of all, it is insecure. It treats security certificates from different sub-domains as interchangeable which is a clear breach of standards and means it is basically untrustable software.

There is only one reason why MS have made it “part of the OS” – because they wanted to.

If I hadn’t just spend over a grand on a Surface Pro 3 (which is incredibly unstable with Win10) I would now be a Mac user.

I was rather dubious about trying to remove the MS Edge browser in case I destabilized my system. But the above tool worked smoothly and no bad after affects. After re-booting my machine I was amazed at just how much bloat was removed from windows10. The Edge browser appears to be much larger than I had ever imaged. My system runs noticeably faster after it was UN-installed. I highly recommend this tweak to anyone who feels confident enough to run it. Definitely a top tip 10 out of 10.

There is a lot of bloat baked into Windows 10. Some of it can be removed, with some MS makes it hard to free up disk space. Edge serves one purpose for a lot of people, and that is to download a proper browser. Good to see a solution for removing it after that’s done.
