How To Disable The Drag Tray In Windows 11

Last Updated on February 25, 2026 by admin Leave a Comment

In the recent versions of Windows 11, when you start dragging a file in the File Explorer or on the desktop, a bar appears at the top with the “Drop here to share, move, or do more” message.

If you drag a file to the top bar, you see several app icons, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Snipping Tool, and others, depending on the file type. The bar or tray also shows options to move the selected file/folder from its current location to a new location and share it with others via Nearby Sharing and other apps.

If you drop the file onto an app icon, the file will be opened with the app. For instance, if you drag and drop a picture file onto the Paint app icon, it will open in Paint.

The bar is called Drag Tray and helps quickly open, move, or share files. Many users are finding the new Drag Tray useful and using it every day. That said, like any feature, there are users who do not like it for various reasons.

If you are not happy with the new Drag Tray, Windows 11 lets you disable it via the Settings app. Complete the directions given below to enable or disable the Drag Tray in Windows 11.

Turn on or off  “Drop here to share, move, or do more” tray in Windows 11

Step 1: Open the Windows 11 Settings app using search or Windows logo + I keyboard shortcut.

Step 2: In the left pane, click System, and then click the Nearby share in the right pane.

Step 3: Finally, turn off the option labelled Drag Tray to disable the Drag Tray. That’s it! From now on, the Drag Tray will no longer appear when you drag a file.
